Role Overview

Join the Sydney-based Apical team responsible for designing, building, and maintaining Nuix Platform and Business APIs, including the REST SDK utilized by customers, partners, and other product teams to power the Nuix Neo platform. Collaborate closely with the Engineering Manager, Product organization, and scrum team to deliver secure, reliable, well-documented API capabilities.

As a mid-level Software Engineer, you will take ownership of user stories and progressively larger features, from design through release. You will write clean, well-tested code, maintain documentation, engage actively in technical discussions regarding backlog grooming, design, CI/CD health, and customer contexts. You will partner with senior engineers and architects, with opportunities to advance into senior roles.

Work Location

This role is based in Sydney. Candidates must attend the Sydney office at least three days per week, with flexibility to work remotely or in-office for the remaining two days.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver user stories and features end-to-end with high quality, minimal rework.
• Design, build, and maintain secure, scalable REST APIs including request validation, consistent response contracts, versioning, and backward compatibility.
• Implement and maintain authentication and authorization flows including API keys, token-based authentication, and scope-based access control.
• Keep API documentation current and useful, including OpenAPI/Swagger specs and developer guides.
• Write meaningful unit and integration tests, uphold coverage, and maintain quality gates.
• Investigate and resolve build and test failures in CI/CD pipelines; ensure healthy deployment paths across cloud and local environments.
• Apply secure coding standards and remediate findings from static analysis and dependency scanning tools.
• Break work into small, releasable increments enabling frequent delivery.
• Participate in planning, backlog grooming, and technical design discussions, provide estimates, and proactively flag risks.
• Collaborate across architects, QA, DevOps, and product teams to ensure consistency, maximize code reuse, and enable seamless integration.
• Share knowledge via documentation, demos, and training; assist in onboarding new team members.
• Conduct code reviews focusing on teaching, explaining rationale, and not just corrections.
• Utilize AI coding assistants effectively to speed learning, enhance design exploration, and share best practices within the team.
• Provide scheduled maintenance support during business hours.

Qualifications and Skills

• Bachelor's or equivalent in computer science, software engineering, machine learning, mathematics, or related quantitative discipline.
• 3 to 5 years of relevant programming experience.
• Proven experience building and operating production REST APIs in service or microservice architectures.
• Proficient in Java with willingness to work across the technology stack; experience with Python or TypeScript is beneficial.
• Understanding of identity and access management protocols such as OAuth2/OIDC, JWT, API keys; experience with Keycloak or similar is advantageous.
• Strong grasp of testing methodologies, version control, and CI/CD processes such as Jenkins or equivalent tools.
• Experience with containerized deployments and infrastructure automation tools like Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, Crossplane; familiarity with API gateways like Traefik.
• Capability to solve complex problems daily.
• Ability to excel in a dynamic, agile environment with urgency and attention to detail.
• Effective collaboration and communication skills across distributed teams and time zones.
• Awareness of current industry trends, development standards and methodologies.
• Interest in AI and agentic capabilities such as MCP servers, semantic search, and document intelligence is a plus.
• Willingness to participate in interviews and mentor junior engineers.
