Job description
About the Role
Join a pioneering UK deep-tech company focused on creating a proprietary photonic computing platform tailored for high-performance and privacy-centric workloads. We are seeking a Senior or Principal Compiler Engineer to architect and develop a new compiler stack optimized for our innovative hardware design. This role involves collaboration across compiler development, machine learning frameworks, and hardware teams to translate complex high-level tasks into efficient executable code for our unique accelerator.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and implement foundational modules for a greenfield compiler stack.
- Design intermediate representations and build lowering pipelines alongside transformation passes.
- Develop compiler optimizations that are sensitive to the hardware architecture.
- Integrate with technologies like Google HEIR, PyTorch, and ONNX Runtime.
- Convert high-level workloads into optimized code targeting novel accelerator hardware.
- Collaborate closely with teams in hardware design, simulation, cryptography, and algorithm development.
- Conduct benchmarking, profiling, and debugging of generated code.
- Shape the technical strategy and architecture of an emerging software platform.
Candidate Profile
- Proven professional expertise with modern C++ programming.
- Direct experience in compiler development focusing on intermediate representations or back-end components.
- Familiarity with MLIR, LLVM IR, or comparable compiler intermediate representations.
- Understanding of compiler passes, lowering stages, optimization techniques, and code generation processes.
- Experience targeting processors, accelerators, or customized architectures.
- Passion for hardware-software co-design and delivering production-quality software systems.
While MLIR experience is advantageous, it is not mandatory. Candidates skilled in LLVM back-end or intermediate representations with interest in expanding to MLIR are encouraged to apply. Experience with GPU, NPU, DSP, FPGA, or custom silicon compiler development is highly desirable. Background in cryptography or Fully Homomorphic Encryption is a plus but not required.
Additional Information
This role offers the unique chance to design and build a compiler infrastructure around truly novel hardware, providing substantial influence on early-stage software architectural decisions.
