Principal Software Engineer

About the Role

BJAK develops technology products that serve millions of users across Southeast Asia. As our user base and system landscape grow, we seek highly skilled technical leaders to tackle challenging engineering problems and elevate the overall engineering standards.

The Principal Software Engineer will guide the technical vision and implementation for key products and systems. This is a hands-on leadership position requiring active involvement in design, coding, and driving critical projects from concept to deployment.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead technical design and delivery of significant products, systems, and engineering projects.
• Create scalable, dependable backend, frontend, API, database, and infrastructure solutions.
• Collaborate closely with the team by contributing code, building prototypes, conducting code reviews, troubleshooting, and resolving production issues.
• Make strategic architecture choices balancing performance, scalability, reliability, cost, and maintainability.
• Translate ambiguous product requirements into clear technical designs and actionable implementation plans.
• Enhance engineering quality through improvements in system design, testing approaches, security measures, monitoring, and development methodologies.
• Lead critical technical initiatives and mentor engineers across various teams.

Candidate Qualifications

• A minimum of 7 years' experience in software engineering, with a proven history of delivering production software systems.
• Expertise in backend, frontend, distributed systems, APIs, databases, or cloud infrastructure domains.
• Strong capabilities in designing architectures for complex and large-scale systems.
• Excellent coding skills and commitment to remain hands-on.
• Proven experience leading major engineering projects from initial design through to live deployment.
• Ability to make informed trade-offs, influence engineers, and resolve challenging production issues.

Preferred but Not Required

• Experience growing engineering teams, scaling systems, or enhancing development methodologies during significant expansion phases.
• Background working across multiple products, regions, or international markets.

Additional Information

This role is fully remote, with a globally diverse team working across different countries and time zones. Successful candidates must be adept at collaborating in a fast-paced, distributed setting and communicate effectively in English, which is the primary working language.
