About BJAK

BJAK's founding mission is driven by the belief that everyone deserves smarter methods to plan, save, and grow their finances. Since its establishment in 2019, BJAK has pioneered the first mobile-first insurance platform, making insurance accessible online to millions across Southeast Asia. Currently, BJAK leads the region's insurance platforms and is broadening its financial services portfolio to include spending, saving, investing, currency exchange, travel, and more, aiming to help people extract greater value from their money daily.

The company boasts a diverse workforce representing over 20 nationalities, working both remotely and from offices worldwide. BJAK seeks passionate, dedicated individuals who prioritize impact over hours and aspire to create innovative, next-generation financial products accessible broadly, not exclusively.

Role Overview

As a backend engineer at BJAK, you will develop the fundamental systems powering BJAK's AI Neobank application. This role demands capability in constructing dependable APIs, operational workflows, and financial product infrastructure scalable across various markets, partners, and millions of users.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop backend services and APIs covering onboarding, account management, payments, card issuance, funds transfers, rewards, travel, foreign exchange, Know Your Customer (KYC) processes, and risk management workflows.
  • Architect reliable systems supporting genuine customer transactions, operational processes, and new financial products.
  • Integrate backend systems with internal modules, financial partners, payment providers, AI platforms, and external services.
  • Ensure backend quality covering reliability, security, latency, monitoring, data integrity, and incident response.
  • Collaborate with product, frontend, mobile, and AI teams to deliver features swiftly and securely.
  • Refine existing systems by simplifying workflows, minimizing manual intervention, and automating repeatable tasks.

Candidate Profile

  • Proven experience in backend engineering within production environments.
  • Strong grasp of APIs, databases, authentication and authorization protocols, queue systems, job processing, event handling, and system integrations.
  • Hands-on experience building services serving live customers or critical internal operations at significant scale.
  • Exceptional skills in debugging, maintaining reliability, ensuring security, and upholding data quality.
  • Ability to balance practical trade-offs among development speed, accuracy, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Experience in fintech domains such as payments, banking, digital wallets, KYC, fraud detection, or risk assessment is a considerable advantage but not mandatory if foundational skills are robust.

Unsuitable Candidates

  • Engineers seeking only isolated backend tasks without broader involvement.
  • Individuals neglecting security, data accuracy, monitoring, or operational risk considerations.
  • Developers unable to adapt to rapidly evolving product requirements.
  • Candidates who discuss scaling systems without actual experience managing production environments.
  • Professionals claiming impact without clear ownership demonstrated.

Expectations and Work Environment

BJAK prioritizes engineers with notable technological achievements, defined not simply by association with renowned companies but by personal contributions toward building, launching, or scaling substantial products, platforms, or systems.

This position is remote; however, applicants must be located within Australia as the role focuses on serving the Australian market. English proficiency is essential, as it is the primary language used across BJAK's international teams.

Hiring Process

  1. Online assessment or practical task.
  2. Technical interview.
  3. Final round interview with the CEO.

For highly qualified candidates, the recruitment process is designed for rapid completion, often concluding with an offer within one week of beginning the interviews. Candidates who promptly complete assessments will receive prioritization.
