Role Overview
The Staff Backend Software Engineer will focus on the Loki project within the Grafana Cloud ecosystem—a composable observability platform incorporating metrics, logs, traces, and profiling. The role involves working on distributed, multi-tenant telemetry databases implemented in Go and deployed on Kubernetes across major cloud providers (GCP, Azure, AWS). Key responsibilities include designing, building, operating, and maintaining critical backend systems emphasizing reliability, performance, and availability. This position supports a remote-first, innovation-driven culture fostering team autonomy, open-source contributions, and use of AI-assisted development tools.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop scalable backend services with an emphasis on high availability and consistent performance.
- Lead projects from conceptualization through deployment and ongoing operational support.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and deliver new functionality while iterating based on real-world feedback.
- Participate actively in team on-call rotations, taking ownership of service reliability and incident management.
- Support mentoring and technical guidance for fellow engineers, including contributing to design discussions.
- Engage with the open-source community, contributing to projects beyond immediate team scope.
- Continuously learn and deepen understanding of large-scale distributed systems, cloud product features, and customer needs.
Candidate Profile

- Pragmatic problem solver capable of breaking down complex challenges into modular, testable solutions that enable fast iteration.
- Effective collaborator and communicator, comfortable working remotely within globally distributed teams.
- Experience with at least one programming language is essential; Go experience preferred, but skills in Python, C, C++, Rust, or similar languages are transferable.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage projects from requirements gathering through to delivery and maintenance in a cloud environment or systems engineering context.
- Proficiency in writing clean, maintainable, and high-performance code.
Desirable Skills
- Development experience with low-level systems such as databases, storage engines, or query processors.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes orchestration.
- Hands-on expertise using Grafana and/or Prometheus in operational or on-call settings, including personal or professional projects.
- Knowledge or interest in microservices architectures and distributed systems.
- Exposure to SRE practices including being on-call, infrastructure as code, and operational maintenance.
Compensation and Benefits
For candidates based in Singapore, the base salary range is SGD 167000 to SGD 209000, with actual remuneration determined by experience and skills. Additional compensation includes equity, potential bonuses, and benefits aligning with regional practices.
