About Kraken
Kraken is pioneering the future of energy by building technology that revolutionizes utilities and creates a smarter energy grid worldwide. Our platform optimizes renewable energy generation and empowers utilities to provide outstanding customer experiences. Our mission is to positively impact one billion people within the next decade and craft a cleaner, better future for all.
Team and Technology
The engineering department at Kraken comprises approximately 1,400 multidisciplinary engineers globally, including server-side, client-side, and mobile developers. Teams operate with agility, independently choosing the most effective tools for their work. Our backend leverages Python predominantly, with Django and GraphQL (Graphene) powering most websites. Continuous integration and delivery are managed via CircleCI, deploying over 100 times daily into AWS EKS with Terraform. Monitoring tools such as Sentry and Datadog ensure stability and reliability. Engineers are encouraged to harness the latest AI technologies with human oversight on code ownership.
Role Overview
We are looking for an Engineer II experienced in client engineering who can deliver medium-scale software solutions. The ideal candidate typically brings 4-7 years of experience, operating at a level comparable to a senior engineer but with support for broader architectural challenges and cross-domain collaboration. This position is fully remote within Australia.
Key Responsibilities
- Solve intricate domain modeling problems in the energy sector using robust, fault-tolerant software primarily coded in Python, Django, GraphQL, Celery, and PostgreSQL.
- Maintain high code quality by writing clean code and thorough testing spanning unit, integration, and functional tests, including boundary and exception scenarios.
- Troubleshoot and debug production-scale issues systematically, extracting lessons from failures and becoming adept with a complex codebase.
- Produce clear documentation for new and existing features to aid team members and stakeholders with varied technical backgrounds.
- Engage collaboratively with team members by sharing perspectives respectfully, accepting constructive feedback, and fostering a positive, growth-oriented culture.
- Take ownership of engineering initiatives, ensure system observability, and independently handle technical escalations.
- Mentor junior engineers, support new team member onboarding, and participate in candidate hiring processes.
- Collaborate across domains to explain technical aspects, advocate for best practices including performance, security, and testability, and contribute to solution ideation.
Required Skills and Experience
- Proficiency with Python and Django or comparable web frameworks.
- Expertise in domain modeling and architectural design.
- Experience working with GraphQL.
- Ability to design and develop reliable and fault-tolerant software systems.
- Knowledge of Celery and asynchronous processing mechanisms.
- Competence with PostgreSQL databases.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with AWS, Terraform, and Kubernetes technologies.
- Exposure to one or more frontend development frameworks.
