Job description

Position Overview

As a Principal Cloud Data Engineer reporting to the Head of ICT Architecture, you will play a pivotal technical leadership role in defining and implementing enterprise data platform strategies. You will oversee major initiatives that unite platform and data product teams, promoting cloud-native, secure, and scalable solutions aligned with the organization's long-term goals. Acting as a trusted consultant to senior platform owners and architects, your expertise will ensure data infrastructure meets strategic business needs.

Key Duties

  • Lead strategic and tactical direction for enterprise-wide data platforms and product teams.
  • Develop, enhance, and optimize secure, scalable, cloud-based data pipelines supporting both batch and streaming workflows.
  • Spearhead the creation of reusable, tailored data products using Azure Databricks.
  • Define, document, and continuously improve engineering standards, data governance, and DevOps methodologies.
  • Deliver architectural guidance, conduct risk evaluations, and shape technical strategy for senior ICT leaders.
  • Mentor and develop engineers and analysts to elevate team skillsets and capabilities.

Required Experience and Skills

  • Over 5 years in senior roles involving cloud data engineering, data architecture, or delivery of data platforms.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with Azure Databricks, Python, Delta Lake, Apache Spark, and Azure Data Services.
  • Demonstrated skill in designing cloud data pipelines and implementing Infrastructure-as-Code/DevOps practices using tools such as Terraform, Bicep, and Azure DevOps.
  • In-depth knowledge of data modeling, metadata management, and governance, particularly using tools like Unity Catalog.
  • Commitment to complying with public sector standards, strict data governance, and national security compliance frameworks.

Additional Information

  • This role is based in Wellington, New Zealand.
  • It is a fixed-term position until June 2027 with the possibility of extension into a multi-year engagement.
