Role Overview

As a Staff Software Engineer in the Team Agent area—part of Toast's Fintech business—you'll be pivotal in building AI-powered autonomous agents. These agents transform workforce management for restaurants, combining state-of-the-art AI with real-world operational insights to optimize labor management.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy Team Agent products utilizing large language models (LLMs) and agentic frameworks.
• Engage in full-stack development and deliver end-to-end solutions within a collaborative, team-focused environment.
• Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to create autonomous agents for workforce management.
• Take part in solution design, estimation, coding, testing, debugging, and code reviews of agent-based systems.
• Promote and implement advanced specification-driven and agentic development methods.
• Mentor team members through pair programming and thorough technical reviews.
• Lead initiatives to ensure high standards in agent development, deployment, and lifecycle quality.
• Contribute actively to product design discussions and feature prioritizations within the Team Agent domain.

Qualifications and Required Skills

• Strong expertise in Java, Kotlin, or similar object-oriented programming languages.
• Proficiency with modern web technologies and standards such as React, TypeScript, REST APIs, and GraphQL.
• Interest or experience in developing coding agents and employing agentic development practices.
• Enthusiasm for building autonomous agents and strong familiarity with large language models.
• Proven ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, product, and customer success teams.
• Experience mentoring colleagues and fostering technical excellence.
• Commitment to maintaining exceptional technical quality and advocating best practices.
• Empathy for customers, aiming to improve their experience through thoughtful design, solid solutions, and ongoing product enhancement.

Preferred Experience

• Background in designing agentic products.
• Experience working with LLMs and machine learning models within system designs.
• Familiarity with event-driven distributed system architectures.
• Knowledge of workforce management principles.
• Understanding of restaurant industry operations.
