Senior Structural Engineer – Data Centre Design Engineering

Role Overview

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is hiring a Senior Structural Engineer to join the design team based in Dublin, Ireland. This role involves spearheading structural design initiatives for AWS Data Centres across the Europe, Middle East & Africa region as well as impacting projects worldwide. As a vital member of a dynamic team including architects, engineers, and designers, the candidate will provide technical expertise and be key in shaping prototype data centre facilities while addressing large-scale implementation challenges.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and update the structural Basis of Design along with prototype design standards and template specifications.
• Lead structural design efforts for data centre projects, creating conceptual schemes influenced by site assessments, local regulations, and permitting criteria.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to define project scope, timelines, and deliverables.
• Produce, review, and manage Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for external design vendors; assess bids and recommend suitable partners.
• Oversee and coordinate external design consultants throughout design and construction, ensuring timely and quality deliverables.
• Work closely with internal and external teams of mechanical, electrical, controls, fire protection, and cabling engineers.
• Manage deviations from AWS reference designs to accommodate localization, site-specific needs, and internal customer requirements.
• Track and analyze key metrics related to design cost, quality, and duration.
• Gather data from operational, construction, and commissioning teams to refine designs.
• Maintain comprehensive project documentation throughout all phases.
• Innovate practical solutions during both design and construction phases to comply with regulations and minimize costs without sacrificing quality or reliability.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.
• Industrial or commercial engineering experience within mission-critical environments like data centres, power generation, or oil and gas facilities.
• Knowledge of latest data centre equipment designs, technologies, and construction techniques.
• Experience with commissioning procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• Familiarity with regional building codes and regulations.
• Experience transitioning design concepts from exploration through to deployment or mass production.
• Ability to read, interpret, and produce construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
