Role Overview
The Senior Principal Product Manager for Software and Digital Platforms (SDP) is a senior-level contributor charged with shaping product definitions, translating market and business demands into actionable product requirements, and fostering coordination between business units, engineering, and program teams. This role acts as a critical technical and commercial bridge linking vertical market teams with software, digital, and AI development groups.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with marketing, engineering, and customers to translate software, digital, and AI business needs into clear product requirements focusing on "what" should be built and "why".
- Define product boundaries, use cases, feature priorities, and requirements for software and digital platforms ensuring technical validity, engineering validation, traceability, and verifiability through delivery.
- Partner closely with software, embedded, systems, and hardware engineering to refine requirements, balance tradeoffs, and design for usability, scalability, and reuse across different markets.
- Assist in roadmap creation and prioritization for software-enabled products and platform features, weighing customer demands, strategic significance, technical feasibility, and resource availability.
- Develop business cases including scoping, development effort estimation, cost considerations, lifecycle impact, and long-term platform reuse potential.
- Clarify the entire product lifecycle from concept to launch, support, and end-of-life, assuring readiness for release, sustained support, and customer adoption.
- Engage with customers and internal stakeholders to collect insights, assess product fit, and adjust product direction based on application demands, feedback, and competitive landscape.
- Align with program management and development teams during planning and execution, offering clear priorities, decision support, and transparency regarding roadmap changes, risks, and dependencies.
- Shape platform strategies by spotting opportunities to standardize software components, enhance developer experience, and expand embedded software reuse across product lines.
- Work with vertical business unit applications, marketing, and enablement to guarantee product requirements, positioning, documentation, and customer-facing materials reflect the precise value propositions and technical features.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Coordinate with vertical business unit application and engineering teams to integrate early customer experience, evaluation flows, and readiness into product plans.
- Consult embedded software and systems teams to understand architecture choices, development tradeoffs, and validation needs informing product decisions.
- Support go-to-market readiness by ensuring product documentation, evaluation platforms, and customer materials align with roadmap and launch goals.
- Drive issue resolution and prioritization across development, application, and support teams throughout the product lifecycle.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or a related technical discipline; advanced degrees or MBA preferred.
- Over 10 years of experience in product management, systems engineering, applications engineering, or related roles supporting embedded products.
- Proven experience managing or defining products involving embedded software, firmware, or software-enabled hardware platforms.
- Practical knowledge of embedded software development methodologies, software lifecycle management, and interactions between firmware, drivers, middleware, hardware, and applications.
- Skilled in converting customer and market requirements into detailed product specifications and guiding cross-functional teams to execute effectively.
- Strong aptitude in technical and business judgment including evaluating tradeoffs, feature prioritization, and business case contribution.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder management capabilities with the influence to guide engineering, business, and customers without direct authority.
- Insightful understanding of competitive landscape, customer workflows, and trends in embedded and digital software platforms.
