About the Role
Join one of Australia's major digital marketplace companies as a Senior Identity Engineer, based in Sydney or Melbourne with a four-day office week. This critical position supports a platform responsible for every user login, token, and API call affecting millions of daily users.
Team and Responsibilities
- Be a key member of the Public Identity Platform squad, managing authenticated interactions, the identity platform, authentication and authorisation systems, developer portals, and public API gateways used by external clients.
- Work on an ambitious roadmap over the next two years to evolve the identity platform and modernize how external businesses interact with platform APIs.
- Serve as a senior individual contributor on a tight-knit team of four engineers alongside a platform expert and team leader, owning medium-scale projects end-to-end without direct supervision.
- Primarily focus on backend development (80-90%) with occasional involvement in login experience improvements.
- Provide informal mentoring to junior engineers without direct managerial responsibilities.
Technical Environment
- The existing platform is modern, well-maintained, and technology stack includes C#/.NET 8, ASP.NET Core, AWS, Duende IdentityServer, OAuth2/OpenID Connect, SNS/SQS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, Redis, PostgreSQL/MySQL, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code.
Candidate Profile
- Demonstrated expertise in backend engineering using C# and .NET for building scalable distributed services.
- Hands-on experience with authentication and authorisation technologies such as OAuth2, OpenID Connect, token management, or owning an identity platform.
- Ability to design, document, and explain comprehensive architectures and solutions clearly.
- Comfortable navigating unfamiliar codebases beyond standard pattern recognition.
- Experience working with Duende IdentityServer or IdentityServer4 in production.
- Knowledge of identity provider migrations or detailed authorisation systems like SpiceDB or OpenFGA.
- Familiarity with API gateways for developer onboarding, credential management, and usage monitoring.
- Strong cloud experience with AWS or another major cloud platform.
- Possession of a bachelor's degree in a relevant technical discipline.
Additional Information
The position offers a competitive package with a base salary up to AUD 185,000 plus a 5% bonus and superannuation benefits.
This role is not a turnaround project; the existing platform is solid, and the main challenge lies in advancing the roadmap.
