About the Role
A prominent Australian digital and consumer technology company seeks three skilled Senior Software Engineers to join their accomplished engineering team. This pivotal team manages a high-volume GraphQL platform delivering millions of weekly requests and billions of monthly operations across web and mobile applications.
The role involves transitioning from a centralized GraphQL architecture to a contemporary federated model featuring team-owned subgraphs. Engineers will have an influential part in enhancing platform reliability, performance, scalability, and developer experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and enhance production GraphQL services.
- Create scalable backend solutions utilizing Node.js and TypeScript.
- Manage GraphQL elements such as schema construction, resolvers, performance optimization, caching strategies, and monitoring.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues within distributed system environments.
- Enhance platform reliability, resilience, scalability, and user/developer experiences.
- Support architectural evolution towards Apollo Federation and decentralized subgraph ownership.
- Collaborate closely with frontend, backend, and product teams across the wider organization.
- Deploy, manage, and debug production services hosted on AWS infrastructure.
- Identify recurring technical problems and drive systemic improvements proactively.
- Mentor junior engineers and influence technical decision-making as a senior individual contributor.
Candidate Profile and Requirements
- Experienced backend engineer with strong expertise in Node.js and TypeScript.
- Extensive hands-on experience building and operating GraphQL APIs in a production setting.
- Proficiency with Apollo Server and/or Apollo Studio platforms.
- Deep understanding of GraphQL schema design, resolver implementation, and service orchestration.
- Strong knowledge of GraphQL performance issues including caching, N+1 query problems, latency, and throughput optimization.
- Experience with observability tools, tracing, and reliability engineering in production environments.
- Background in building and maintaining Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) solutions, API gateways, or aggregation layers.
- Solid AWS experience with deploying and managing large-scale production services.
- Exposure to high-traffic and large-scale system operation.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across diverse teams.
- Proactive attitude with strong ownership and accountability.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge or experience with Apollo Federation, federated GraphQL structures, or managing dedicated subgraphs.
- Track record of decomposing monolithic GraphQL schemas into federated or team-based architectures.
- Familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker, ECS, and Kubernetes.
- Experience with Python support for legacy services.
- Background with .NET technologies.
- Previous work within consumer-focused, marketplace, e-commerce, or digital product environments.
- Use of AI-assisted engineering tools to enhance productivity and code quality.
