Principal Welding Engineer

Overview

The Principal Welding Engineer plays a critical role in analyzing internal and external operational challenges, recommending optimal welding practices, and independently managing complex welding issues. This specialist is expected to lead functional teams or projects, bringing in-depth welding expertise combined with a broad understanding of welding principles within engineering functions.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and guide the welding engineering discipline and metallurgical welding consultancy services for both onshore and offshore project operations and project management teams.
• Develop and manage the Project Welding Qualification Execution Plan detailing required weld procedures, qualification schedules, and the volume of consumables/materials.
• Monitor project priorities aligned with schedules and ensure consistent progress reviews.
• Review and approve all weld procedures in collaboration with customers and certifying authorities.
• Select electrodes based on physical, chemical, corrosion properties, weldability, and cost-effectiveness.
• Assess project schedules, material control reports, and consumable estimates for adjustments in execution plans.
• Oversee welding school facilities to enhance workforce skills and welding workmanship standards.
• Support and advance automatic welding system development.
• Conduct bid-related reviews and estimates.
• Handle welding consumable forecasting, requisitioning, and tracking specific to projects.
• Perform readiness assessments for significant offshore campaigns.
• Collaborate with fabrication, yard welding, marine, and welding societies on R&D and innovations involving ferrous and non-ferrous welding technologies.
• Maintain relationships with technical groups, certification bodies, manufacturers, and research institutions to stay current with welding advances.
• Investigate and resolve metallurgical, welding, and quality issues, including failure analysis and fitness-for-purpose judgments.
• Initiate evaluations of nonconforming work to ensure suitability.
• Manage performance and development of welding engineers, including training and compensation decisions.
• Conduct technical evaluations at vendor facilities.
• Provide welding engineering inputs for bidding processes.
• Monitor ongoing projects during execution.
• Coordinate closely with multiple stakeholders including operations managers, discipline managers, clients, QC/NDT engineers, certifying bodies, consulting firms, and global welding technology groups.

Qualifications

• Master's degree (MS/M Tech/ME) in Welding or Bachelor's degree (BS/BE/B Tech) in Welding, Metallurgy, or Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum of 8 years of direct experience in welding, metallurgy, materials, and subsea pipeline projects.
• Professional registrations such as Chartered Engineer (C Eng.), Senior Member of the Welding Institute (SenMemWeldI), or membership in equivalent bodies are preferred.
• Welding inspection certifications are advantageous.
