Senior Welding Engineer

Job Overview

The Senior Welding Engineer will deliver welding engineering outputs and manage developmental projects, while providing metallurgical consultancy to teams in Fabrication and Marine operations. This role collaborates with operations managers, discipline managers, project management teams, customers, field engineers, QC/NDT engineers, client representatives, certifying authorities, and other technical groups such as TWI and DNVGL.

Key Responsibilities

• Formulate the comprehensive Project Welding Execution Plan outlining all required weld procedures, qualification schedules, and material needs such as electrodes.
• Prioritize project tasks aligned with schedules and monitor progress accordingly.
• Obtain necessary reviews and approvals of project weld procedures through interaction with customers and certifying bodies.
• Collaborate with the welding engineering team to accomplish research and development objectives.
• Stay connected with technical organizations to keep abreast of advances in welding technologies.
• Coordinate with testing facilities for qualification coupon testing.
• Select welding electrodes based on their physical, chemical, corrosion resistance characteristics, weldability, and cost efficiency.
• Ensure adequate availability of welding consumables through regular usage and inventory assessments.
• Analyze project schedules and consumable consumption data to adjust welding plans as needed.
• Provide daily guidance to welding engineers and mentor trainees on compliance with codes, standards, and project demands.
• Investigate and resolve metallurgical and welding-related quality issues by identifying failure causes and recommending suitable measures.
• Support development and deployment of automated and mechanized welding systems.
• Oversee welding school operations focused on workforce training to enhance welding techniques and workmanship quality.
• Review vendor-supplied welding engineering documentation.
• During bid stages, assess customer specifications, identify qualifications and clarifications, and estimate welding consumable and qualifications requirements.
• Recognize special execution needs as they arise.
• Begin involvement with engineering critical assessment (ECA) based acceptance criteria for applicable projects.

Collaborations

This role involves liaising with multiple stakeholders including operations and discipline managers, project management teams, field engineers, QC/NDT personnel, client representatives, certifying authorities, and technical organizations such as TWI and DNVGL.

Qualifications

• A Master's degree in Welding.
• A Bachelor's degree (4-year program) or certifications such as IWE or EWE in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum of 5 years' experience directly related to welding engineering or metallurgy/materials in the fabrication or construction sector.
• Preferred qualifications include welding inspection credentials and education in Total Quality Management (TQM).
