Role Overview

We are searching for an experienced software development leader to manage and inspire a team of engineers responsible for products impacting millions of customers globally. As a Software Development Manager at Amazon Web Services, you will oversee the entire software development lifecycle, from design and architecture through deployment and maintenance, holding ownership for your team's technical vision and strategy to create solutions addressing real customer challenges.

Team and Technology

The AWS Simple Workflow (SWF) team empowers customers to develop sophisticated workflow orchestration capabilities to meet their business needs. You will be instrumental in guiding both the technology direction and the development team.

Responsibilities

• Lead and expand a software development team by defining its charter, vision, and roadmap, ensuring the delivery of robust, scalable, and maintainable software throughout its lifecycle.
• Set and own a 1-2 year technical strategy for your products, making architectural decisions focused on scalability, performance, security, and maintainability.
• Coach engineers by facilitating collaborative development plans, providing meaningful feedback, and assigning strategic projects that promote individual and team growth.
• Collaborate with product management, engineering peers, and cross-functional stakeholders to synchronize priorities, address dependencies, and produce cohesive customer-focused solutions.
• Develop operational metrics and audit tools to monitor system health and customer experience, proactively identify risks, and drive simplification of processes and architecture.

A Typical Day

Your day may begin by examining operational dashboards and managing requests from partner teams, followed by design reviews where you challenge and refine technical approaches. Coaching one-on-one with team members and collaborating on product roadmaps will be ongoing priorities, all while balancing hands-on technical guidance with leadership.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years managing engineering teams.
• At least 7 years of professional engineering experience.
• 8+ years leading the design and development of multi-tier web services.
• Deep understanding of software, hardware and network development lifecycle practices, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, builds, testing, certification, and live site operations.
• Experience collaborating with product or program management teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Skilled in communicating with users, technical teams, and senior leaders to gather requirements and articulate product features, technical design, and strategy.
• Proven experience recruiting, mentoring, and managing software engineers to enhance their skills and effectiveness.

Compensation includes other components such as sign-on bonuses and restricted stock units.
