Job description
Overview
Infantry Soldiers are key combat personnel in the Army, primarily tasked with engaging and defeating enemy forces. They are integral to the Combat Arms team alongside Artillery and Armoured Soldiers. Capable of operating worldwide across diverse environments such as arctic tundra, mountains, jungles, and deserts, they undertake various operations including airmobile and amphibious missions.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Skillfully operate and maintain a variety of weapons systems including rifles, hand grenades, light to heavy machine guns, and anti-tank weapons.
- Utilize sophisticated field equipment for communication, navigation, and night-vision surveillance.
- Perform inspections and maintenance on weapon systems, vehicles, survival gear, and personal protective equipment.
- Participate in airborne operations and coordinate with support elements like fighter aircraft, tactical units, and artillery.
- Engage in hand-to-hand combat, camouflage, patrol, assault, defense, and escape-evasion tactics.
Work Environment
Work is primarily conducted outdoors in conditions simulating field environments during training and operations. Infantry Soldiers are usually posted to battalions within Canada but may be deployed globally. Regular Force members can expect relocations throughout their careers, while Primary Reserve Force members generally serve part-time locally with minimal relocation obligations.
Entry Requirements and Training
- No prior work experience or career-specific skills are necessary; recruiters assist candidates to assess eligibility.
- Minimum education required is completion of Grade 10 or Secondary 4 (Quebec standards); foreign credentials may be accepted.
- The initial training phase is the Basic Military Qualification course at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Quebec, focusing on fundamental military skills and physical fitness.
- Infantry training spans 17 weeks at one of three Military Training Centres, covering weapons care, fieldcraft, defense construction, navigation, patrolling, and Infantry tactics.
- Opportunities exist for specialized training in areas such as parachuting, mountain warfare, instructional techniques, first aid, urban operations, and close quarter combat.
Career Progression
Availing advanced courses is possible for those showing aptitude and potential. These include leadership roles, reconnaissance, sniper training, heavy weaponry, winter or jungle operations, and tactical intelligence.
Part-Time Options
The Infantry role is also available part-time with the Primary Reserve across Canada, allowing members to balance civilian careers or studies while participating in training and deployments. Reserve members receive pay proportional to Regular Force rates, benefits, and pension plans without relocation requirements.
