Job description

Role Overview

Armour Officers serve as leaders in the Canadian Army's Combat Arms, operating Armoured Fighting Vehicles such as Leopards, Light Armoured Vehicles, and various wheeled Light Utility Vehicles. They command tank or LAV troops, overseeing soldiers' training, morale, discipline, and combat readiness, while ensuring their equipment is operationally ready. Depending on their troop, they employ tactics ranging from stealth and sensor-based reconnaissance to heavy armoured firepower engagements.

Work Environment

These officers serve across diverse terrains and climates—Arctic tundra, jungles, deserts, mountains, or urban areas. Deployments include both international missions and domestic emergency support. Initial postings are typically to one of three Armour regiments located in Ontario, Alberta, or Quebec. Regular Force members must be prepared for relocation during their career, while Primary Reserve members typically serve locally part-time without mandatory postings.

Entry and Training Pathways

  • Direct Entry: Candidates with a university degree matching CAF criteria may proceed directly to on-the-job training after completing basic military officer training.
  • Paid Education: The Canadian Armed Forces sponsor degree completion through the Royal Military College system, providing full pay and benefits during studies in exchange for a service commitment.

Initial training includes 12 weeks of basic officer training covering military fundamentals, leadership, weapon handling, and physical fitness. Second language training may follow, lasting between two and nine months depending on proficiency. Subsequent training at the Infantry School and the Armoured Troop Leaders Course expands tactical, weapons, and leadership capabilities. Additional specialized courses may include Assault Troop Leader, Joint Tactical Airspace Controller, Chemical Biological Radiation and Nuclear Advisor, and Technical Staff Officer roles.

Part-Time Roles

Positions are available with the Primary Reserve Force, allowing members to serve part-time locally while pursuing education or civilian employment. They participate in regular training sessions and may volunteer for deployments. Reserve members receive training identical to Regular Force personnel and enjoy competitive pay, benefits, and pension eligibility.

Additional Information
