Job description

Role Overview

Armour Officers in the military play critical roles by providing reconnaissance and direct-fire support during combat operations. They operate Armoured Fighting Vehicles such as the Leopard main battle tank, Light Armoured Vehicles, and various wheeled Light Utility Vehicles. These officers are integral to Combat Arms alongside Infantry, Artillery, and Combat Engineering regiments.

As leaders of armoured vehicles in an Armoured Squadron, Armour Officers command either a tank troop or a LAV troop. They oversee soldier training, uphold morale and discipline, maintain combat readiness, and ensure the operational condition of equipment.

Their battlefield strategies vary by vehicle type: LAV Troop Leaders utilize stealth, adaptability, and advanced sensors to detect enemies and prioritize targets, while Tank Troop Leaders wield mobility, protection, and firepower to engage and defeat adversaries directly.

Work Environment

These officers serve in diverse and demanding environments, such as Arctic tundras, tropical jungles, deserts, mountains, and urban areas under various climate conditions. Deployments may be domestic in support of emergencies or international operational missions. Initial postings are to one of three regiments located in Ontario, Alberta, or Quebec.

Regular Force members can expect relocations throughout their careers, while those in the Primary Reserve typically serve part-time at local units without compulsory moves, usually one night weekly and some weekends, with possibilities for full-time roles.

Entry and Training Pathways

Direct Entry is available for candidates with a university degree that meets military criteria, following basic and officer qualification training. Alternatively, the Regular Officer Training Plan offers paid education within the Royal Military College system, combining military service with academic studies leading to a degree while receiving full salary and benefits.

Initial training includes a 12-week basic officer program focusing on military knowledge, leadership principles, regulations, weapon handling, first aid, field exercises, leadership application, and fitness. Training is available in English or French and must be successfully completed before advancing.

Subsequent training includes optional second language instruction, Infantry School attendance for advanced combat arms skills, and the Armoured Troop Leaders Course, where officers refine their abilities in communications, weapons firing, armoured tactics, maneuvers, and crew command.

Specialized development opportunities include roles such as Assault Troop Leader, Joint Tactical Airspace Controller, Chemical Biological Radiation and Nuclear Advisor, and Technical Staff Officer.

Part-Time Opportunities

Armour Officer roles are also open in the Primary Reserve Force, providing part-time employment with the option to train locally while balancing civilian careers or studies. Reserve members are trained equivalently to Regular Force officers and receive pay and benefits proportional to their service, including pension eligibility. Part-time service typically involves evening and weekend commitments, with occasional full-time positions and voluntary deployments.
