Job description
Role Overview
Armour Officers serve as leaders of armoured vehicles within an Armoured Squadron in the Canadian Armed Forces. Their duties involve providing reconnaissance and direct-fire support using Armoured Fighting Vehicles such as the Leopard main battle tank, Light Armoured Vehicles (LAVs), and various wheeled Light Utility Vehicles. As key members of the Combat Arms alongside Artillery, Infantry, and Combat Engineers, they command either a tank troop or a LAV troop, managing soldiers' training, morale, discipline, and combat readiness alongside ensuring their equipment's operational preparedness.
Operational Roles
- As LAV Troop Leaders in Light or Medium Cavalry Squadrons, officers utilize stealth, adaptability, and innovation with advanced sensors to locate adversaries and identify crucial targets.
- As Tank Troop Leaders in Heavy Armoured Squadrons, they focus on mobility, protection, and firepower to engage and defeat enemies using armoured direct-fire tactics.
Work Environment
Armour Officers operate in diverse terrains including arctic tundra, tropical jungles, deserts, mountains, and urban environments under varied climatic conditions. Deployments may occur domestically for national emergencies or internationally on operational missions. Initial postings are to one of three Armour regiments: The Royal Canadian Dragoons in Petawawa, Ontario; Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) in Edmonton, Alberta; or 12e Régiment blindé du Canada in Valcartier, Quebec.
Regular Force members may face relocations during their careers with limited accommodation flexibility. Primary Reserve Force members work part-time at their local unit without mandatory relocations, usually one night weekly and some weekends, with opportunities for full-time employment.
Entry and Training
- Direct Entry Options: Candidates with a university degree matching CAF criteria may enter required on-the-job training after basic training and officer qualification.
- Paid Education Options: CAF sponsors candidates to attain a bachelor's degree through the Royal Military College System, offering full salary, medical and dental coverage, and paid vacation in exchange for military service.
Basic officer training occurs over 12 weeks at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School, covering military knowledge, leadership, CAF customs, weapons handling, first aid, physical fitness, and practical exercises. It is offered in English and French, and successful completion is mandatory for further training.
Post-basic training may include second language development lasting from two to nine months. Officers then attend Infantry School at the Combat Training Centre in Gagetown, New Brunswick, to enhance leadership and combat skills including advanced weapons handling and tactics.
Armour-specific training at the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps School includes communications, weapon firing, cavalry tactics, armoured maneuvers, and crew commanding techniques. Additional specialization courses might include Assault Troop Leader, Joint Tactical Airspace Controller, Chemical Biological Radiation and Nuclear Advisor, or Technical Staff Officer roles.
Part-Time and Reserve Opportunities
Armour Officer positions are available part-time through the Primary Reserve Force at locations nationwide. Reserve members train to the same standards as Regular Force personnel and typically serve evenings and weekends at their home unit while maintaining civilian careers or education. Pay is approximately 92.8% of Regular Force rates with benefits and pension eligibility. They may volunteer for deployments internally or internationally.
