Job Overview

The Hygienist plays a vital role by leveraging specialized expertise to implement, administer, and advise on specialist processes within the framework of occupational health and safety legislation. This position provides authoritative insights and expert analysis to influence decision-making, recommend business solutions, and contribute to initiatives aimed at minimizing occupational hygiene hazards in the workplace. Additionally, it involves technical assessment of related statutory matters.

This position entails completing an intensive training program designed to prepare you for regulatory work as a WorkSafe Inspector. Upon appointment, you will regularly visit diverse workplaces, assessing safety compliance, investigating concerns, and assisting organizations in fulfilling legal safety requirements.

Main Duties

• Conduct workplace inspections to evaluate adherence to occupational health and safety laws.
• Investigate incidents, hazards, and safety issues reported in workplaces.
• Provide actionable advice and guidance to employers and employees to enhance safety.
• Facilitate positive safety outcomes through influence and education.
• Develop and maintain productive relationships with various stakeholders.
• Initiate appropriate regulatory actions when necessary.
• Contribute to creating safer working environments across Victoria.

Recruitment and Training Process

• Online video interviews and cognitive & psychometric assessments in late September.
• Panel interviews scheduled for October/November.
• Police, reference, and medical background checks in November/December.
• Job offers and contract signing in December.
• Employment starting in February with a 16-week paid induction program beginning February 8.
• Participation in a Diploma of Government course as part of professional development.

Eligibility Criteria

• Possession of a valid, unrestricted Victorian driver's license.
• Availability to attend all recruitment activities and training schedules.
• Successful completion of national criminal history, reference, and medical checks.
• Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency status.

The 16-week induction requires attendance at the Essendon Fields office three days per week and the local office two days per week.

• Ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
• Excellent skills in influencing, negotiation, and conflict resolution.
• Proficient verbal and written communication abilities.
• Capability to interpret and apply relevant legislation, standards, or technical data.
• Comfortable using technology and various computer systems.
• Postgraduate qualifications in occupational hygiene and/or a relevant science degree, preferably with a major in chemistry or physical science.
• Eligibility or progress toward full membership in the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygiene (AIOH).
