Position Overview

The Planning Engineer will play a vital role in supporting project cost control, scheduling, performance tracking, and financial management activities. This role works closely with project teams to track budgets, monitor expenditures, assess progress, and analyze forecasts to ensure project objectives are met efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

• Support project financial systems and procedures including reporting requirements.
• Use financial concepts and data analysis to assist project assignments.
• Spot project activities and changes that impact costs or finances.
• Develop and maintain Work Breakdown Structures for small-scale projects.
• Assist in setting project baseline data from engineering documentation and scope descriptions.
• Monitor project cost and schedule while performing basic variance analyses.
• Maintain project cost and schedule baselines.
• Apply foundational accounting principles in project financial activities.
• Analyze project data for trends, forecasts, and performance metrics.
• Contribute to collecting and validating project progress information.
• Support implementation of Earned Value Management, scope control, and change management practices.
• Evaluate manpower needs and labor costs relative to budgets.
• Track expenses including purchase orders, commitments, and subcontract costs.
• Maintain oversight of project revenue, costs, and forecast tracking.
• Assist in scheduling activities and monitor critical milestones.
• Integrate cost and schedule data for performance measurement.
• Support financial impact assessments of scope and project changes.
• Prepare and contribute to routine project cost, schedule, and performance reports.
• Participate in project cost review meetings, offering relevant insights.
• Ensure accurate project control data is maintained for decision-making.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering, finance, accounting, business, construction management, project management, or related field.
• Professional certifications in project controls, cost management, scheduling, or EVM are advantageous.
• 7 to 10 years of relevant experience in project controls, cost control, project planning, finance, or cost engineering.
• Solid grasp of project controls and cost management principles.
• Experience in budgeting, forecasting, tracking costs, and variance analysis.
• Basic knowledge of Earned Value Management techniques.
• Familiarity with Work Breakdown Structures, cost/schedule baselines, and progress measurement methods.
• Understanding of project scope control and change management.
• Ability to analyze manpower, labor hours, and labor costs.
• Knowledge of purchase orders, subcontract commitments, and project expenditures.
• Basic accounting and financial principle awareness.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and reporting capabilities.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and project reporting tools.
• Experience or familiarity with scheduling and cost-control software such as Primavera P6, MS Project, SAP, Oracle, or equivalents is a plus.
