Job Overview

This role involves performing driver's license examination duties including determining applicant eligibility for licensing services such as renewals, replacements, driving tests, and handgun permits. The position is located in Cleveland, TN within the Department of Safety and Homeland Security and requires administering vision, written, and road skills testing, along with collecting fees and processing applications.

Responsibilities

  • Provide detailed explanations to the public regarding state laws, licensing rules, procedures, office operations, fees, and the application process.
  • Collect fees and required identification documents, verify authenticity, review applicant testing files, and approve candidates for appropriate exams.
  • Manage cash register operations including counting and recording cash at shift start/end, reconciling receipts and cash, calculating daily revenue, preparing bank deposits, and delivering funds to the bank.
  • Guide applicants through form completion and test procedures; conduct vision screenings, written exams, and road tests according to state standards; take applicant photographs digitally.
  • Inform applicants of test outcomes, instruct on retest requirements if necessary, and accurately log results in the licensing database.
  • Inspect applicant vehicles for safety compliance including lighting, brakes, and signals; assess driving skills and adherence to traffic laws during road tests.
  • Update licensing records and biographical information in the Tennessee License Information System; verify data accuracy with applicants.
  • Manage special cases including immigration-related processing, accommodations for disabilities, audits, reporting, and procurement assistance.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma.
  • Undergo comprehensive background checks including fingerprinting and criminal history screening.
  • No convictions or insanity acquittals for permanent disqualifying criminal offenses as defined by federal regulations.
  • No convictions for interim disqualifying offenses within the previous seven years or incarceration for such offenses within the past five years.
  • Not subject to any outstanding warrants for qualifying offenses.
  • Must have a valid motor vehicle operator's license or obtain one before appointment.
  • Must maintain a clean driving record free from DUI, reckless driving, license suspensions, and excessive moving violations within five years.
