Job Overview

The State of Tennessee is seeking candidates for the position of Driver's License Examiner at the Department of Safety and Homeland Security in Morristown, TN. This full-time role involves conducting driver's license examinations to determine applicants' eligibility for various licensing services, including renewals, replacements, and handgun permits. The position requires administering vision, written, and road skills tests, processing application data and fees, and ensuring compliance with state guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Communicate state laws, licensing protocols, and Department policies to the public; respond to inquiries about office operations and application procedures.
  • Collect fees and verify identification documents such as Social Security cards, proof of residence, and medical certification cards; evaluate applicant eligibility for testing.
  • Manage cash registers, reconcile daily receipts against reports, prepare and deposit bank deposits accurately.
  • Guide applicants through form completions and testing procedures; conduct vision, written, and road skill exams; use digital photography for identification; inform applicants of results and retake procedures when necessary; maintain computerized records.
  • Inspect vehicles to ensure operational safety, including checks of lights, brakes, and signals; assess applicants' driving skills for traffic law compliance and safe operation.
  • Update and verify information in the License Information System for Tennessee (LIST), ensuring data accuracy with applicant confirmation.
  • Support special projects, handle customer concerns, process immigration cases, make accommodations for special needs, and assist with audits, reporting, and supply orders as required.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Minimum education equivalent to high school graduation.
  • Successful completion of a fingerprint-based and name-based criminal background check, including full disclosure of criminal history.
  • No convictions for permanent disqualifying criminal offenses per 49 CFR section 1572.103(a).
  • No convictions or releases from incarceration related to interim disqualifying offenses within 7 and 5 years respectively per 49 CFR section 1572.103(b).
  • No outstanding warrants related to disqualifying offenses per federal regulations.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license or ability to obtain one before appointment.
  • Driver record within the past five years must lack DUI, reckless driving, license suspensions for moving violations, or more than four moving violations (exceptions possible).
