Driver's License Examiner

Job Overview

The State of Tennessee is seeking a full-time Driver's License Examiner located in Chattanooga, TN within the Department of Safety and Homeland Security. This role involves administering various driver's license services including eligibility determination, license renewals, replacements, and testing. The position requires adherence to state laws, managing application data and fees, and performing vision, written, and road skills evaluations.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide clear explanations of state laws, licensing criteria, and department policies to the public.
• Handle fee collection and verify identification documents such as social security cards, residency proof, current licenses, and USDOT medical cards.
• Manage cash registers; reconcile daily cash and receipt reports, calculate office revenue, and prepare bank deposits.
• Guide applicants through form completion and test procedures; administer vision, written, and road tests per Tennessee regulations.
• Photograph applicants digitally and record results accurately in the computer system.
• Inspect vehicles for safety by checking functioning of lights, brakes, and signals, and observe driving skills to ensure compliance with road safety rules.
• Update and verify applicant information in the License Information System for Tennessee (LIST).
• Assist with complex tasks such as customer inquiries, special accommodation processing, audits, reporting, and supply ordering.

Qualifications and Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent education.
• Completion of a background check including fingerprinting and criminal history records review.
• No convictions or felony warrants concerning specific disqualifying offenses under federal regulations within mandated timeframes.
• Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license or ability to obtain one prior to employment.
• Driver record must not show DUI, reckless driving, license suspensions for moving violations, or more than four moving violations within the past five years.
