Job Synopsis

The State of Tennessee is seeking a full-time Driver's License Examiner to work in Blountville, TN, within the Department of Safety and Homeland Security, Sullivan County. The primary role involves assessing individuals seeking various driver licensing services such as renewals, replacements, testing, and handgun permits. The job requires administering vision, written, and road skills tests, collecting fees, and processing related documents.

Role Responsibilities

  • Provide detailed explanations to the public regarding state laws, licensing requirements, and departmental rules and policies for driver licensing procedures.
  • Collect fees and verify essential documents like social security cards, proofs of residence, current driver’s licenses, and USDOT medical cards, ensuring their authenticity.
  • Manage daily cash operations including counting register cash at shift start and end, printing receipt reports, reconciling revenues with INFOPAC reports, preparing deposits, and banking funds.
  • Guide applicants through form completion and testing procedures, administer vision screenings, written and road driving tests, and capture applicant photographs digitally.
  • Advise applicants on test outcomes, provide instructions for retests if necessary, and accurately record results in databases.
  • Inspect vehicles to evaluate their operational safety components such as lights, brakes, and turn signals before testing driving abilities including adherence to traffic regulations.
  • Maintain and update license information and applicant records in the License Information System for Tennessee (LIST), ensuring data accuracy by verifying details with applicants.
  • Engage with complex assignments including handling customer inquiries, immigration cases, accommodations for special needs, audits, reporting, and resource ordering.

Candidate Qualifications

  • Must have educational equivalency to high school graduation.
  • Applicants are required to undergo and pass a fingerprint-based and name-based criminal background check.
  • Must have no disqualifying criminal offenses as described under Title 49 CFR sections 1572.103(a) and (b), including permanent or interim disqualifications within specified time frames prior to application.
  • Must not be under any active warrants related to disqualifying offenses.
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or be able to acquire one before appointment.
  • Driver record for five years must be clear of DUI, reckless driving, license suspensions for moving violations, or more than four moving violations; exceptions may be considered based on other factors.
