Driver's License Examiner

Job Overview

The State of Tennessee is seeking a full-time Driver's License Examiner to be based in Savannah, TN at the Department of Safety & Homeland Security in Hardin County. This role involves administering driver’s license examinations, including vision, written, and road tests, determining applicants’ eligibility for services such as renewals and replacements, and handling related licensing processes.

Key Responsibilities

• Inform applicants about state laws, licensing rules, policies, office hours, locations, fees, and application procedures.
• Collect fees and verifying required documents such as social security cards, proofs of residence, driver's licenses, and medical cards.
• Manage cash registers by counting cash at shifts’ start and end, generating daily receipt reports, identifying discrepancies, and preparing bank deposits.
• Guide applicants through form completion and test procedures; administer vision, written, and road skills tests following Tennessee standards; photograph applicants and communicate test results including retake procedures.
• Inspect vehicles to ensure they meet safety standards including lights, brakes, and signals; evaluate applicants’ ability to operate vehicles safely and comply with traffic laws.
• Update and verify operational and licensing records in the License Information System for Tennessee, ensuring accuracy of applicants’ personal data.
• Assist with complex cases, customer inquiries, immigration processing, accommodations for special assistance applicants, audits, reports, and supply orders as needed.

Qualifications and Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Completion of a criminal background check including fingerprinting and records review.
• No convictions or insanity acquittals for permanent or interim disqualifying criminal offenses as defined in 49 CFR 1572.103 within specified timeframes.
• Must not be under felony warrant or recently released from incarceration for disqualifying offenses.
• Hold or be able to obtain a valid motor vehicle operator's license prior to appointment.
• Driver record must be free of DUI, reckless driving, license suspensions for moving violations, and limited to no more than 4 moving violations in the past 5 years.

Additional Information

The annual salary is $34,752, with a monthly equivalent of approximately $2,896, with an approved starting monthly salary of $3,041. A criminal background check must be completed for consideration. Candidates must submit accurate driver's license details as part of their application.
