Job Overview

The Department of Safety and Homeland Security in Madison County, Jackson, TN, is seeking a full-time Driver's License Examiner. This role involves performing driver's license examinations of moderate complexity, determining applicants' eligibility for services such as renewal, replacement, testing, and handgun permits. The examiner administers vision, written, and road skills assessments and manages application data and fee processing.

Primary Responsibilities

• Communicate relevant state laws, licensing criteria, and departmental policies to the public, addressing inquiries regarding office hours, fees, and application procedures.
• Collect fees and verify identification documents such as social security cards, proofs of residence, valid licenses, and medical cards, ensuring applicant eligibility.
• Manage cash registers by counting and documenting cash on hand at shift start and end, generating receipt reports, reconciling office revenues against INFOPAC reports, preparing bank deposits, and delivering deposits to banks.
• Guide applicants in completing forms and testing procedures; administer vision, written, and driving tests per Tennessee regulations; capture applicant photographs; communicate test outcomes; provide instructions for retesting if necessary; and log results in the database.
• Conduct vehicle safety inspections including checking lights, brakes, and turn signals; evaluate applicants' driving skills and compliance with traffic laws by observing vehicle operation.
• Update licensing records and biographical data in the License Information System for Tennessee (LIST), ensuring accurate verification with applicants.
• Handle advanced tasks such as managing complex customer inquiries, processing immigration-related cases, providing accommodations for special needs applicants, supporting office audits and reports, and assisting with supply or equipment orders.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent education.
• Successful completion of a criminal background check including fingerprint and name-based records clearance.
• No permanent disqualifying felony convictions as defined by Title 49 CFR section 1572.103(a).
• No conviction or insanity acquittal for interim disqualifying offenses within the past seven years.
• No release from incarceration for disqualifying interim offenses within the past five years.
• No outstanding felony warrants as per Title 49 CFR sections 1572.103(a) or (b).
• Possession of or ability to obtain a valid motor vehicle operator's license prior to appointment.
• Driver record free of DUI, reckless driving, license suspensions for moving violations, and no more than four moving violations in the past five years (exceptions may be considered).
