Job Overview

The State of Tennessee is seeking a full-time Driver's License Examiner to operate at the Department of Safety & Homeland Security in Knoxville, TN. The role involves evaluating applicants for driver's licenses, including license renewals, replacements, testing, and handgun permits, by administering vision, written, and road tests. Candidates will handle application processing and fee collection as well.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide clear explanations to the public about state laws, licensing requirements, and Department procedures related to driver's licenses, including answering questions about office logistics and fees.
• Collect fees and verify identification documents such as social security cards, proof of residency, and current licenses; validate the authenticity of documents and approve applicants for testing.
• Manage cash registers by counting and recording cash on hand during shifts, generating daily receipts, identifying discrepancies, and reconciling office revenue. Prepare and deliver bank deposits.
• Guide applicants in completing forms and taking tests, conduct vision screenings, administer written and driving tests as per Tennessee regulations, photograph applicants digitally, communicate results, and record data.
• Inspect vehicle safety features such as lights and brakes and assess applicants' driving skills to ensure compliance with road safety laws and traffic rules.
• Update licensing records in the License Information System for Tennessee (LIST), verify applicant data, and confirm accuracy with applicants.
• Handle special cases requiring extra assistance, support audits, generate reports, and manage supplies or equipment orders as needed.

Qualifications and Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent education required; proof of education must be provided.
• Completion of a background clearance and fingerprint-based and name-based criminal history check is mandatory.
• Candidates must have no convictions or not guilty verdicts by insanity for permanent disqualifying offenses per CFR Title 49 section 1572.103(a).
• No convictions or insanity verdicts for interim disqualifying offenses within the last 7 years, and no release from incarceration within 5 years for such offenses.
• No outstanding warrants for felonies listed under CFR Title 49 disqualifying offenses.
• Must hold or be able to obtain a valid motor vehicle operator's license before appointment.

Additional Information

• The approved monthly salary is $3,041, with an annual salary of $34,752.
• Applicants must pass a criminal background check as part of the hiring process.
• Driver standards require a valid driver's license with no violations such as DUI, reckless driving, more than four moving violations, or license suspensions within the past five years, with possible exceptions.
• Only one position is available at the Knoxville location.
