Overview

Join Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) team as a Critical Environment Technician (CET), responsible for maintaining vital infrastructure in our Datacenters to ensure continuous operation. This role involves coordinating with vendors, distinguishing between safe and unsafe work environments, understanding the operation of critical environment equipment, conducting diverse maintenance tasks, responding to onsite incidents in collaboration with other facilities professionals, and utilizing telemetry and monitoring tools to track equipment performance. This position requires you to work fully onsite at one of Microsoft’s Data Centers in Melbourne.

CO+I powers Microsoft’s cloud services including Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Azure. The team supports professional growth through training programs like career rotations, diversity & inclusion initiatives, and certifications. Our global infrastructure comprises over 200 datacenters across 32 countries, serving more than a billion customers and 20 million businesses worldwide. We prioritize sustainability and ongoing optimization of our datacenter designs and operations, all aligned with Microsoft’s mission to empower individuals and organizations globally. Our culture upholds respect, integrity, accountability, and inclusion, fostering a workplace where everyone can thrive.

  • Use computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to track equipment assets and fulfill maintenance work orders.
  • Act promptly and lead onsite incident response teams during abnormal operational events, coordinating corrective repairs with minimal supervision.
  • Develop, enhance, or comply with emergency operating procedures (EOPs), methods of procedure (MOPs), and standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to critical environment operations and incident handling.
  • Perform planned, predictive, and corrective maintenance and repairs on equipment like electrical, mechanical, and cooling systems following defined procedures with minimal oversight.
  • Possess hands-on knowledge for troubleshooting equipment, systems, and components within your trained discipline independently.
  • Provide troubleshooting guidance to less experienced team members.
  • Follow all safety and security protocols including job hazard assessments (JHAs), environmental health and safety (EH&S) standards, and workplace procedures to ensure safe, high-quality, and reliable operations.
  • Demonstrate and support Microsoft’s cultural values and expected behaviors.

Qualifications

  • Required: High School Diploma, GED, TAFE certification or equivalent plus at least 1 year of industry experience in mission critical services such as data centers, oil and gas refineries, hospitals, pharmaceutical manufacturing, or similar environments; or equivalent applicable work experience.
  • Preferred: High School Diploma or equivalent with 3+ years of mission critical services experience, or an Associate's Degree, technical trade certification, or higher education plus 3+ years of relevant industry experience.

Background and Security Requirements

  • Must pass Microsoft Cloud background check initially and biennially.
  • Verification of Australian citizenship (including valid Australian Passport) mandatory to fulfill federal security prerequisites.
  • This role may require an enhanced security clearance (NV1/2, PV) via the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency.
