About Qualcomm and Role Overview

Qualcomm Technologies' Multimedia R&D and Standards Group is searching for dedicated engineers specializing in Video Compression Research. This role involves joining a renowned team focused on pioneering algorithms, hardware designs, and systems employing both classical and machine learning technologies for advanced video compression, video processing, point cloud coding, AR/VR, and computer vision applications. The ideal candidate exhibits strong analytical creativity and a passion for innovations in video compression technology.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and optimize advanced video compression algorithms enhancing codec efficiency.
• Engage in research and innovation related to AI-based compression tools.
• Represent Qualcomm at prominent standardization forums including JVET, MPEG Video, and ITU-T/VCEG.
• Document and present new methodologies and implement innovations via standards contributions, patent filings, academic conferences, and journal publications.

Essential Skills and Experience

• Comprehensive grasp of video and image coding theories, algorithms, techniques especially regarding standards like HEVC and VVC.
• Experience working with deep learning models such as CNNs, RNNs, and autoencoders.
• Proven research record supported by publications and/or patents in video coding or processing domains.
• Proficiency in programming, particularly C/C++, with familiarity in at least one machine learning framework like PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Excellent English communication skills, strong work ethic, and ability to collaborate effectively within teams.
• Possession of a Master’s or PhD degree with relevant experience or academic work focused on video compression, image processing algorithms, computer vision, or machine learning.

Educational and Qualification Requirements

• PhD or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or closely related disciplines.
• At least 1 year of experience in programming languages such as C, C++, MATLAB.
• Alternatively, candidates with a Bachelor’s degree plus 6+ years of relevant engineering experience, or Master’s degree with 5+ years, or PhD with 4+ years in software, hardware, systems engineering, or similar fields are also qualified.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $186,700 to $280,100 annually. Compensation includes a discretionary annual bonus scheme and potential annual RSU grants (note that employees under sales incentive plans are ineligible for the annual bonus).
