Role Overview
The Utility Locator is tasked with identifying and marking subsurface utilities to facilitate safe excavation and construction activities. Utilizing various locating instruments, maps, and work orders, the position ensures accurate detection and mapping of underground infrastructure. This role is essential to prevent utility damage, uphold public safety standards, and provide precise and timely support to field operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct underground utility locates adhering to company, state, and utility guidelines.
- Interpret and analyze maps, blueprints, GIS data, and work order details to trace utility routes.
- Operate locating technology such as transmitters, receivers, and toners to pinpoint and mark underground utilities.
- Keep comprehensive records including sketches, notes, photographs, GPS coordinates, and completed documentation of locate activities.
- Address routine locate tickets, emergency locate requests, priority projects, and utility re-marks promptly.
- Maintain clear communication channels with contractors, property owners, utility companies, and internal personnel.
- Properly maintain tools, equipment, and company vehicles to ensure operational readiness.
- Comply with safety protocols including OSHA, 811 guidelines, and state One-Call laws throughout work execution.
- Report immediately any mismarked locations, potential damage threats, hazards, or service disruptions.
- Assist team members and partake in additional duties or special assignments as directed.
Performance Metrics
- Accuracy and quality scores in locating utilities.
- Achievement towards zero preventable utility damages.
- Completion rate and punctuality of ticket handling.
- Adherence to safety norms and record of incident-free operations.
- Precision in documentation, including photos, notes, and map verification.
- Customer and contractor satisfaction levels.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum education: High school diploma or GED.
- Previous experience is preferred in utility locating, telecommunications, construction, gas, water, or electrical sectors.
- Familiarity with One-Call systems, 811 regulations, and underground utility structures is advantageous.
- A valid driver's license is mandatory.
Working Conditions and Exposure
- Extensive outdoor work subject to diverse weather conditions.
- Exposure to construction environments, traffic, and operational machinery.
- Operations on both private and public right-of-way areas.
- Occasional requirement to respond to emergency or after-hours locate requests.
- Frequent interactions with contractors, homeowners, utility companies, project managers, field supervisors, and internal teams.

- Meticulous adherence to accuracy and regulatory compliance, reducing excavation-related damages.
- Strict observance of field safety procedures, appropriate personal protective equipment use, and situational awareness in high-risk zones.
- Effective communication with stakeholders and thorough, accurate field documentation.
Physical Demands
- Capability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry weights up to 50 pounds.
- Competency to work in trenches, confined spaces, and on uneven terrain.
- Skilled in handling hand tools and locating devices.
- Ability to traverse long distances throughout daily duties.
- Requirement of good visual acuity and manual dexterity.
Safety and Compliance
This position is safety-sensitive, holding responsibility for personal and others' safety. Compliance with all safety protocols, wearing proper PPE, safe operation of vehicles and equipment, up-to-date certifications, participation in safety trainings, hazard reporting, and passing drug and alcohol screenings are essential.
