Overview
The Utility Locator plays a vital role in identifying and marking underground utilities to ensure the safety of excavation and construction projects. Utilizing specialized equipment, maps, and work orders, this position accurately determines the location of underground utilities to prevent damages and support safe operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct underground utility locates in compliance with company policies, state laws, and utility industry standards.
- Analyze and interpret maps, prints, GIS data, and work orders to trace utility lines.
- Operate diverse locating tools such as transmitters, receivers, and toners to mark utility routes precisely.
- Keep detailed records of all locating activities, including sketches, notes, photographs, GPS coordinates, and completed documentation.
- Handle routine, emergency, high-priority, and re-mark locate requests effectively.
- Ensure effective communication with contractors, homeowners, utility providers, and team members.
- Maintain and service equipment, tools, and company vehicles in good working order.
- Adhere strictly to safety standards including OSHA, 811, and state One-Call regulations during all work.
- Report any mismarks, safety hazards, potential damage risks, or service issues immediately.
- Assist teammates and contribute to field operations as necessary.
- Undertake additional duties or special projects as assigned.
Performance Indicators
- Accuracy of utility locates and quality audit results.
- Minimization of preventable utility damage incidents aiming for zero damage.
- Timely and complete handling of tickets.
- Compliance with safety norms and incident-free operations.
- Thoroughness and precision in documentation including photos and mapping verification.
- Positive feedback from customers and contractors.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
- Preferred background in utility locating, construction, telecommunications, gas, water, or electrical sectors.
- Familiarity with One-Call systems, 811 regulations, and underground utility infrastructure is advantageous.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license is mandatory.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Regularly works outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Exposure to construction zones, traffic, and moving machinery.
- Work includes both private and public rights-of-way.
- Availability for occasional emergency and after-hours locate requests.
- Interacts regularly with contractors, homeowners, utility companies, project managers, field supervisors, and internal crews.
- Must be physically capable of standing, walking, bending for extended periods, carrying up to 50 pounds, and navigating trenches or uneven terrain.
- Requires manual dexterity and visual acuity to operate tools and equipment effectively.
Safety and Compliance
This role is safety-sensitive, requiring the employee to follow all safety protocols strictly. Responsibilities include wearing personal protective equipment, reporting unsafe conditions, passing drug and alcohol testing, maintaining certifications, and upholding company and client safety regulations. Non-compliance may result in disciplinary actions, including termination.
