Overview
The Utility Locator is tasked with identifying and marking underground utilities to facilitate safe excavation and construction activities. This role requires using specialized locating tools, reviewing maps, and adhering to work orders for precise identification of underground facilities to ensure public safety and prevent utility damage.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct underground facility locates complying with company, state, and utility regulations.
- Interpret maps, prints, GIS records, and work orders to trace utility routes.
- Utilize locating devices such as transmitters, receivers, and toners to mark underground utilities accurately.
- Maintain detailed records of all locating activities, including sketches, photographic evidence, GPS data, and completed work orders.
- Respond promptly to routine requests, emergencies, high-priority projects, and requests for re-marks.
- Effectively communicate with contractors, property owners, utility companies, and internal teams.
- Ensure proper maintenance of tools, locating equipment, and company vehicles.
- Perform all tasks adhering strictly to OSHA standards, 811 locate guidelines, and One-Call state regulations.
- Report immediately any inaccuracies in markings, potential hazards, or risks to utility services.
- Assist team members and support field operations as needed.
- Undertake additional duties or special projects when assigned.
Performance Metrics
- Accuracy and quality of utility locates.
- Achieving zero preventable utility damages.
- Timely completion of locate tickets.
- Compliance with safety protocols and maintaining an incident-free record.
- Precision in documentation including photos, notes, and mapping verification.
- Customer and contractor satisfaction ratings.
Qualifications and Requirements
- High school diploma or GED mandatory.
- Preferred experience in utility locating, construction, telecommunications, gas, water, or electrical sectors.
- Familiarity with One-Call processes, 811 regulations, and underground utility infrastructures is advantageous.
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Work occurs predominantly outdoors under diverse weather conditions.
- Presence on construction sites with traffic exposure and moving machinery.
- Operations on public and private rights-of-way.
- Availability for occasional emergency or after-hours locating requests.
- Engagement with a variety of stakeholders including contractors, homeowners, utility representatives, supervisors, and project managers.
- Capacity to stand, walk, bend extensively, carry loads up to 50 lbs, work in trenches or confined spaces, and utilize hand tools and locating devices.
- Good visual acuity and manual dexterity required.
Safety and Compliance
This position is safety-sensitive, requiring commitment to all safety procedures, use of PPE, vehicle and equipment operation according to policies, participation in required safety training, and compliance with drug and alcohol screening. The employee must uphold their own safety and that of others, with failure to comply potentially resulting in disciplinary actions including termination.
