Utility Locator

Job Overview

The Utility Locator is tasked with identifying and marking subsurface utilities to promote safe digging and construction efforts. Utilizing specialized locating devices, maps, and detailed work orders, the incumbent accurately detects and outlines underground infrastructure. This position is vital to avoiding damage to utilities, ensuring public safety, and bolstering field operations through precise and prompt locating services.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct underground utility locating activities following company, state, and utility protocols.
• Interpret maps, blueprints, GIS data, and work orders to trace the routes of underground utilities.
• Operate locating equipment like transmitters, receivers, and tone generators to indicate utility lines accurately.
• Record all locating efforts through sketches, notes, photographs, GPS logs, and completed documentation.
• Address routine locate requests, urgent emergency tickets, prioritized projects, and utility re-marks.
• Maintain clear communication with contractors, property owners, utility companies, and internal staff.
• Keep tools, equipment, and company vehicles in functioning and safe condition.
• Adhere strictly to OSHA standards, 811 regulations, and state One-Call rules ensuring safety compliance.
• Promptly report any mismarks, potential hazards, risks of damage, or service concerns.
• Assist team members and support field operations as required.
• Undertake special projects or additional assignments as requested.

Performance Indicators

• Accuracy and quality scores of located utilities.
• Number of preventable utility damages, striving for zero damage incidents.
• Completion rate and timeliness of ticket handling.
• Compliance with safety protocols and incident-free work records.
• Accuracy of documentation including photographic and mapping verification.
• Customer and contractor satisfaction levels.

Candidate Requirements

• Minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
• Preferred experience in utility locating or related fields such as construction, telecommunications, gas, water, or electrical systems.
• Familiarity with One-Call systems, 811 rules, and underground utility frameworks is advantageous.
• Must hold a valid driver’s license.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Frequent exposure to outdoor environments under various weather conditions.
• Work involves construction zones with potential traffic and machinery hazards.
• Tasks performed on both private and public property rights-of-way.
• Ability to respond to emergency or outside normal hours locate requests.
• Regular interaction with contractors, homeowners, utility providers, and supervisors.
• Physical capabilities include standing, walking, bending for prolonged intervals; lifting up to 50 pounds; maneuvering in confined or uneven spaces; and operating locating devices.
• Strong visual acuity and manual dexterity are essential.

Safety and Compliance

This is a safety-sensitive role where the employee is accountable for personal and others' safety by complying with all relevant safety standards, company policies, and client expectations. Responsibilities include correct usage of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe operation of vehicles and equipment, abiding by safety procedures, maintaining necessary certifications, partaking in safety trainings, reporting unsafe situations, and successfully passing drug and alcohol screenings. Failure to comply may lead to disciplinary measures, including termination.
