Job Overview

The Utility Locator role involves identifying and clearly marking underground utilities to ensure that excavation and construction activities proceed safely and without incident. Utilizing specialized locating devices, maps, and detailed work orders, the locator pinpoints underground structures accurately. This critical position helps to avoid damage to utilities, uphold public safety standards, and support operational fieldwork by delivering precise and prompt location services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out underground utility locates following company policies, state regulations, and utility standards.
  • Interpret maps, blueprints, GIS data, and work orders to determine the course of underground utilities.
  • Operate locating equipment—such as transmitters, receivers, and toners—to mark utilities correctly.
  • Document all locating tasks through sketches, written notes, photographs, GPS coordinates, and finalized work orders.
  • Address routine tickets, emergencies, urgent projects, and re-mark requests promptly.
  • Maintain effective communication with contractors, property owners, utility companies, and internal colleagues.
  • Keep tools, equipment, and vehicles in good operating condition.
  • Adhere to safety standards including OSHA, 811 guidelines, and state One-Call requirements.
  • Report any mismarks, hazards, or risks of damage immediately.
  • Assist team members and support field operations as needed.
  • Undertake additional assignments or special projects as requested.

Performance Indicators

  • Accuracy and quality of locates verified by audits.
  • Strive for zero preventable utility damages.
  • Completion rate and timeliness of tickets issued.
  • Compliance with safety protocols and incident-free records.
  • Precision in documentation with photographs, notes, and mapping confirmation.
  • Positive feedback from customers and contractors.

Candidate Requirements

  • Minimum education: high school diploma or GED.
  • Experience with utility locating or related fields such as construction, telecom, gas, water, or electrical trades preferred.
  • Familiarity with One-Call systems, 811 regulations, and underground infrastructure is advantageous.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

Work Environment and Conditions

  • Primarily outdoor work regardless of weather conditions.
  • Exposure to construction zones, traffic, and moving machinery.
  • Operate within both private and public rights-of-way.
  • Occasionally respond to emergency or after-hours tickets.
  • Regular interaction with contractors, homeowners, utility firms, project managers, and supervisors.

  • Strong commitment to safety practices and personal protective equipment usage.
  • Clear communication skills and thorough documentation of field activities.

Physical Requirements

  • Capability to stand, walk, and bend for extended durations.

  • Comfortable working in confined spaces, trenches, or uneven terrain.
  • Skilled in using manual tools and locating devices.
  • Able to walk long distances daily.
  • Good visual acuity and manual dexterity.
