Role Overview
The Traffic Control Flagger is responsible for managing vehicle flow around construction zones, road maintenance sites, and other areas requiring traffic control. Duties include setting up and removing traffic control devices such as signs, cones, and barricades to ensure safety for workers and the public. The Flagger communicates effectively with motorists through hand signals, signs, and other devices to guide traffic safely through or around work areas. This position requires significant standing time, attention to detail, and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Install and remove traffic control devices around designated work zones.
- Control traffic flow using stop/slow paddles efficiently.
- Maintain communication with team members through two-way radios.
- Stand, walk, and use upper body strength for up to 10 hours daily.
- Lift, carry, push, pull, and maneuver equipment weighing over 50 pounds.
- Drive company vehicles to transport equipment to and from various sites.
- Conduct routine vehicle inspections and basic maintenance checks.
- Operate safely amidst exposure to outdoor elements, moving machinery, traffic, fumes, and noise.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- Successful completion of background checks, including motor vehicle records.
- Compliance with federal Department of Transportation drug testing and safety standards.
- Proper use of required safety gear including safety-toed boots, hard hat, safety glasses, and reflective vest.
- Proficient operation of two-way radios.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather and traffic conditions.
- Strong communication skills for effective interaction with contractors and internal teams.
- Team-oriented mindset with excellent attendance and dependable transportation.
- Completion of ATSSA Flagger certification and company-provided Defensive Driving courses.
- Flexibility to travel statewide, including overnight stays, and to work nights and weekends as project demands.
- Availability for rotating on-call duties.
