Position Overview

The Traffic Control Flagger is tasked with managing vehicle movement around construction and maintenance zones. Responsibilities include the placement and removal of traffic safety equipment such as signs, cones, and barricades to protect workers and the public. This position demands the use of hand signals, signage, and other tools to direct motorists safely around work sites. Candidates must demonstrate strong attention to detail, endurance for extended outdoor work in varying weather, and the ability to stand for long durations.

Key Duties

  • Deploy traffic control gear like cones and signs to redirect traffic flows near work areas.
  • Utilize stop/slow paddles to guide vehicle movements effectively.
  • Communicate clearly with colleagues using two-way radio systems.
  • Remain active by standing, walking, and using arms for up to 10 hours daily.
  • Handle physical tasks including lifting and moving over 50 pounds.
  • Operate company vehicles to transport equipment between locations.
  • Conduct routine inspections and maintenance on vehicles to ensure safe operation.
  • Work outdoors exposed to weather elements, vehicle traffic, machinery, noise, fumes, and airborne particles.
  • Follow all organizational policies and procedures strictly.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by management.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of background check and driving record verification.
  • Passing a drug screening and meeting Department of Transportation regulations.
  • Proper use of safety gear including work boots with safety toes, hard hats, safety glasses, and reflective vests.
  • Proficiency in operating two-way radios for team communication.
  • Flexibility to work in diverse weather and traffic circumstances.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate with contractors and colleagues, ensuring exemplary customer service.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team setting.
  • Consistent attendance, reliable transport availability, and dedication to work responsibilities.
  • Completion of ATSSA Flagger certification and defensive driving training sponsored by the company.
  • Availability for statewide travel including potential overnight stays, night shifts, and weekend work as project demands dictate.
  • Commitment to a rotating on-call duty schedule.
