Position Overview

The Traffic Control Flagger is tasked with managing vehicular flow around construction zones, road maintenance sites, and other operational work areas. Responsibilities include setting up and removing traffic control devices such as signs, cones, and barricades to safeguard workers and the public. Communication with motorists is maintained through hand signals, signs, and various control devices to direct safe passage. This position is physically demanding, requiring extended standing periods and outdoor work in different weather conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deploy and retrieve traffic control devices like signs and cones to redirect vehicles safely.
  • Use stop/slow paddles to effectively control traffic movement.
  • Maintain clear communication with crew via two-way radios.
  • Stand, walk, and use arms for extended periods, up to 10 hours daily.
  • Lift and maneuver items that may weigh over 50 pounds.
  • Transport equipment using company vehicles and perform routine vehicle inspections and maintenance checks.
  • Work outdoors exposed to varying weather, traffic, equipment, noise, and airborne elements.
  • Follow all company policies, procedures, and safely perform assigned duties.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of background and motor vehicle records checks.
  • Passing mandatory drug screening and adherence to federal DOT regulations.
  • Use of standard safety gear including safety-toed work boots, hard hat, safety glasses, and reflective vest.
  • Competence in operating two-way radios.
  • Ability to work in diverse weather and traffic scenarios.
  • Excellent communication skills for coordination with contractors and internal staff, emphasizing high customer service quality.
  • Effective team collaboration skills.
  • Strong reliability, good attendance, and dependable transportation.
  • Completion of ATSSA Flagger training and company-provided Defensive Driver training.
  • Flexibility to travel statewide, including occasional overnight stays, and availability for night and weekend shifts as project needs dictate.
  • Willingness to participate in a rotating on-call schedule.
