Position Summary
The Traffic Control Flagger is tasked with managing vehicle movement safely around construction sites, road maintenance zones, and other work areas. Responsibilities include deploying and retrieving traffic control devices such as signs, cones, and barricades to protect workers and the public. The Flagger communicates with motorists through hand signals, signs, and paddles to direct traffic flow, requiring strong focus, outdoor endurance, and the ability to stand lengthy shifts.
Key Responsibilities
- Install traffic control equipment like signs and cones around work sites to reroute vehicles securely.
- Use stop/slow paddles effectively to regulate traffic movement.
- Maintain constant communication with team members via two-way radios.
- Stand and walk for up to 10 hours daily, extending reach with hands and arms as needed.
- Handle lifting and moving objects exceeding 50 pounds.
- Operate company vehicles to transport traffic control materials between locations.
- Conduct routine inspections and upkeep of vehicles to ensure operational reliability.
- Work safely amid varying weather conditions, moving machinery, traffic, and environmental hazards such as fumes and noise.
- Follow all company policies and perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Possess a valid driver's license.
- Clear background check including driving records.
- Pass drug screening and comply with federal Department of Transportation criteria.
- Use appropriate safety gear including hard hats, safety boots with toe protection, safety glasses, and vests.
- Operate two-way radios proficiently.
- Adapt to changing weather and traffic conditions while maintaining high service standards when engaging with contractors and colleagues.
- Demonstrate teamwork skills and reliability, including excellent attendance and dependable transportation.
- Completion of ATSSA Flagger certification and company Defensive Driver training programs.
- Availability to travel within the state for projects, including occasional overnight stays, night shifts, weekends, and rotating on-call duties.
