Role Overview
The Traffic Control Flagger is tasked with managing traffic flow safely around construction zones, maintenance sites, and other work areas. This includes setting up and dismantling traffic control devices such as signs, cones, and barricades to protect both workers and the public. Communication with motorists is done using hand signals, signs, and various traffic devices to guide them safely. The role demands strong attention to detail, the ability to work outdoors across different weather conditions, and to stand for prolonged periods.
Key Responsibilities
- Deploy and remove traffic signs, cones, and control devices to redirect traffic around work areas.
- Control traffic flow effectively utilizing stop/slow paddles to ensure safety.
- Maintain clear communication with team members via two-way radios.
- Stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms for up to 10 hours daily.
- Lift, carry, push, pull, and maneuver objects weighing over 50 pounds.
- Operate company vehicles to transport equipment to job sites, performing routine inspections and vehicle maintenance checks.
- Work regularly outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to moving machinery, traffic, fumes, and noise levels from moderate to loud.
- Follow all company policies and procedures diligently.
- Undertake additional tasks as assigned by management.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Valid driver’s license is mandatory.
- Must pass a comprehensive background check, including verification of motor vehicle records.
- Success in drug testing and compliance with federal DOT mandates is required.
- Proper safety gear use (including work boots with safety toe, hard hat, safety glasses, and safety vest) is compulsory.
- Proficient use of two-way radio communication devices.
- Preparedness to work under diverse weather conditions and varying traffic environments.
- Excellent communication skills to interact effectively with contractors and internal personnel while providing outstanding customer service.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment.
- Demonstrated reliability, excellent attendance, and a strong work ethic with dependable transportation.
- Completion of the ATSSA Flagger training and company-provided Defensive Driver training is required.
- Willingness to travel throughout the state with occasional overnight stays, and flexibility to work night shifts and weekends as project demands arise.
- Availability to participate in a rotating on-call schedule.
