Position Overview
The Traffic Control Flagger is responsible for safely directing traffic around construction work zones, setting up and removing traffic control devices such as signs, cones, and barricades. The role demands vigilant attention, communication skills using hand signals and radios, and physical stamina to work outdoors in various weather conditions, sometimes standing for up to 10 hours daily.
Key Responsibilities
- Deploy traffic control signs, cones, and barricades to reroute and manage traffic effectively around work sites.
- Utilize stop/slow paddles to regulate vehicular flow and ensure safety.
- Communicate continually with team members via two-way radios to coordinate traffic movement and safety measures.
- Transport traffic control equipment by operating company vehicles safely between job locations.
- Conduct routine maintenance checks and inspections on company vehicles to ensure operational readiness.
- Handle physical tasks including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and moving items heavier than 50 pounds.
- Work outdoors exposed to weather conditions, moving equipment, traffic, fumes, noise, and airborne particles.
- Comply with all company policies and perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Hold a valid driver’s license.
- Pass background investigations including motor vehicle record checks and drug screening complying with federal DOT standards.
- Wear appropriate safety gear—work boots with safety toes, hard hat, safety glasses, and reflective vest.
- Operate communication devices such as two-way radios proficiently.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with contractors and teammates, providing excellent customer service.
- Exhibit reliability with excellent attendance and have dependable transportation.
- Complete ATSSA Flagger training and company-provided Defensive Driver course successfully.
- Flexibility to work in diverse weather and traffic conditions, including nights, weekends, and travel statewide with occasional overnight stays.
- Availability for rotating on-call schedules.
