Position Overview

The Traffic Control Flagger is tasked with managing vehicle flow in and around construction zones, road maintenance areas, and other work sites to ensure safety for both workers and the public. This includes installing and removing traffic control signs, cones, and barricades. Communication with motorists is conducted using hand signals and various signage to guide vehicles safely through or around active work areas. The role requires attentiveness, endurance for prolonged standing and outdoor work in diverse weather conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deploy traffic control devices such as signs and cones to redirect traffic near work zones.
  • Control traffic flow utilizing stop/slow paddles efficiently.
  • Maintain effective communication with crew members via two-way radios.
  • Stand, walk, and reach for up to 10 hours daily.
  • Handle physical demands including lifting, pushing, and moving objects exceeding 50 pounds.
  • Drive company vehicles to transport equipment to various job sites.
  • Conduct regular vehicle inspections and upkeep to ensure operational safety.
  • Work consistently outdoors, exposed to varying weather, moving vehicles, equipment, fumes, and noise levels ranging from moderate to loud.
  • Follow all company policies and procedures rigorously.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Successfully clear background, including motor vehicle records checks.
  • Pass drug testing in compliance with federal Department of Transportation standards.
  • Wear mandated safety gear: steel-toed work boots, hard hat, safety glasses, and reflective safety vest.
  • Proficient with two-way radio operations.
  • Adaptable to working under various weather and traffic conditions.
  • Strong communication skills to interact effectively with contractors and internal teams while maintaining high customer service standards.
  • Team-oriented with reliable attendance, dependable transportation, and a robust work ethic.
  • Completion of ATSSA Flagger training and company Defensive Driver training courses is mandatory.
  • Available for state-wide travel including occasional overnight stays, with flexibility to work nights and weekends as projects demand.
  • Willingness to participate in a rotating on-call schedule.
