Tech Lead | Senior Software Engineer

About the Role

This permanent position based in Auckland entails a genuine technical leadership role combined with hands-on software engineering. You will act as the senior technical expert in a team of 4-6 engineers, responsible for solution design, architecture, and ensuring engineering excellence. The role involves close collaboration with the Product Owner to shape technical strategies while managing feasibility, risk, and effort.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design and architecture of solutions across your squad, establishing strong engineering standards and best practices.
• Make critical decisions on technical methodologies, design patterns, and tooling choices.
• Stay actively engaged in coding, development, and delivery of production-quality software.
• Champion code quality including thorough testing, documentation, and secure engineering principles.
• Conduct code reviews, facilitate technical discussions, and resolve complex technical challenges.
• Coach and mentor junior and intermediate engineers to strengthen team capabilities.
• Partner with the Product Owner to advise on technical feasibility, effort estimation, risks, and trade-offs.
• Utilize and guide effective use of AI-assisted development tools such as Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot to enhance productivity while maintaining code quality.
• Lead investigation and resolution of critical application and production incidents through root-cause analysis.
• Ensure solutions are secure, supportable, observable, and ready for deployment to production.

Candidate Profile

• Minimum of 5 years’ professional software engineering experience, including successful end-to-end delivery of production systems.
• Proven strong skills in software architecture and solution design.
• Experience in a Tech Lead, Lead Engineer or senior technical leadership capacity, setting engineering standards and driving code reviews.
• Hands-on proficiency with modern programming languages and frameworks.
• Solid experience leveraging AI-assisted coding tools, with the ability to critically review and validate AI-generated code.
• Strong cloud computing knowledge, particularly in AWS or Azure environments.
• Excellent problem-solving capabilities including debugging and root-cause analysis.
• Comprehensive understanding of security-focused and production-grade engineering practices.
• Proven experience mentoring and developing fellow engineers.
• Effective communication skills to articulate technical decisions, risks, and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical audiences.
