Overview
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is launching its first European Sovereign Cloud (ESC), a major advancement in utility computing specifically designed for EU customers. This innovative project requires seasoned systems engineers skilled in automation and operational excellence. As a key member of the AWS Managed Operations team, you will help build and lead technical operations and development teams managing vital AWS services like EC2, S3, DynamoDB, Lambda, and Bedrock within the EU region.
Role Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee the launch of the European Sovereign Cloud scheduled for 2025, collaborating closely across global AWS teams.
- Drive improvements in system availability, latency, reliability, and performance for customer-facing EU cloud services.
- Continuously monitor operational health, analyze anomalies, and generate actionable reports to enhance system efficiency.
- Review change management materials and proactively manage operational backlogs to maintain seamless system function.
- Develop and test automation scripts to improve workflow effectiveness and reduce manual interventions.
- Educate and share knowledge about the ESC architecture and operations within the wider AWS team.
- Participate in 24/7 on-call rotations to quickly address and resolve system incidents, ensuring high system resilience.
Eligibility and Other Requirements
- Applicants must be nationals of an EU member state and reside within the EU to qualify for this role.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory.
- Relocation support is available for successful candidates moving within the European Union.
- Commitment to an on-call duty roster is required.

Basic Qualifications
- Demonstrated systems engineering expertise including hardware, software, networking, and operating systems.
- Experience scripting in languages such as Bash, Python, or Ruby.
- Strong proficiency in Linux environments and networking principles with troubleshooting capabilities.
- Proven ability to create, revise, and optimize operational procedures and implement best practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with monitoring tools like CloudWatch, Datadog, Grafana, or Elastic.
- Experience mentoring junior engineers and leading cross-team projects.
- Background supporting services on AWS or other cloud platforms.
- Experience managing 24/7 high availability distributed systems and optimizing application performance and resource utilization.
- Skills with Infrastructure as Code frameworks such as CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, or Ansible.
