About Affirm and the Role
Affirm's mission is to empower consumers with clear and predictable payment options without hidden fees, enhancing the moments that truly matter. As Affirm advances its advertising platform and transforms its Marketplace into a leading shopping destination, search functionality becomes a critical driver of consumer engagement. The search team is newly established to own both search and recommendation experiences with aims to enhance customer experience, increase monetization, and add merchant value. This initiative lays the groundwork for an innovative agentic platform and positions Affirm as the go-to destination for discovery, comparison, and shopping.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and articulate the annual technical strategy for your team, aligning it with significant business-impacting initiatives.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, designers, and analysts during the product development lifecycle to navigate technical sustainability, risks, and trade-offs.
- Serve as an amplifier for your team by defining and promoting effective technical solutions and operational procedures.
- Take charge of your team’s system operations and reliability by implementing monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting mechanisms to maintain uptime and support on-call activities.
- Champion a culture focused on quality and ownership through establishing code review and design standards and advocating these practices broadly via documentation and technical presentations.
- Mentor and foster talent development within your team by offering constructive feedback and leading through example.
Required Qualifications
- At least 8 years of experience in designing, developing, and deploying backend systems at scale using programming languages such as Python or Kotlin.
- Proven expertise in building highly available distributed systems leveraging technologies like AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes.
- Experience creating consumer-facing applications using UI frameworks such as React.
- Minimum 2 years of experience working with search technologies or recommendation engines.
- Track record of delivering major features or system components, including deprecating outdated functionality, guided by well-defined technical and execution plans.
- Ability to write clean, maintainable, and understandable code that others can easily adopt.
- Comfort with ambiguity and the capacity to analyze systems from granular code level to high-level architectural flow.
- Evidence of ongoing growth and impact through feedback integration from engineering and cross-functional counterparts.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with a global engineering team.
Compensation and Benefits
The position falls under Base Pay Grade P and Equity Grade 7, with a Canadian base salary range of CAD $181,000 to $241,000 annually. Employees typically start at the lower end of the pay scale, which reflects factors like location, experience, and relevant skills. The total compensation includes potential monthly stipends for health, wellness, and technology expenses, comprehensive benefits covering 100% of medical, dental, and vision premiums for employees and dependents, as well as eligibility for equity awards from Affirm Holdings, Inc.
Location and Work Setup
This is a remote-first role available to candidates residing in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan. Although primarily remote, some occasions may require in-person attendance at Affirm's offices. New hires are invited to an in-person onboarding event.
