Staff Engineer - Data Platform Experience

About the Role

As a Staff Engineer on the Data Platform Experience team at Datadog, you will lead the development and evolution of the Observability Data Platform, enhancing how engineering teams build, deploy, and maintain their products. This leadership role requires expertise in distributed systems and includes owning the design and implementation of shared platform capabilities that streamline developer workflows, boost operational visibility, and speed up delivery with confidence. You'll tackle broad company challenges such as cost management, operational tools, platform health, and developer experience improvements.

Key Responsibilities

• Spearhead major engineering projects that enhance the functionality and usability of the Observability Data Platform for product teams.
• Create scalable features for cloud cost management, including allocation tracking, trend analysis, and cost-saving recommendations.
• Build operational intelligence tools and self-service options to help engineering teams monitor platform health, troubleshoot issues, and optimize operations.
• Design reusable platform services and developer workflows to increase engineering independence and reduce operational complexity across diverse products.
• Provide cross-team technical leadership by influencing architectural decisions, mentoring engineers, and setting high engineering standards through hands-on coding.
• Participate actively in on-call rotations, contributing to the continuous improvement of platform reliability, observability, and operational excellence.

Candidate Profile

• Experience designing and building large-scale SaaS or cloud platforms with strong knowledge in distributed systems.
• Proficient in software architecture and system design, with a history of leading complex initiatives involving multiple teams.
• Possesses a platform engineering mindset focused on creating reusable capabilities that enable faster development across teams.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence technical direction across organizational boundaries without direct authority.
• Hands-on experience with backend development technologies, particularly Java and Go, as well as distributed infrastructure like Kafka and Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with observability platforms, internal developer platforms, operational tools, developer productivity enhancements, or AI-driven engineering workflows is advantageous but not mandatory.
