Role Overview

This permanent position based in Wellington Central offers a rewarding legal career with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). You will join a dedicated team of in-house lawyers, policy experts, and Parliamentary Counsel to support the government's initiatives to grow New Zealand's economy through effective legislation.

Key Duties

You will contribute to the drafting and implementation of legislation across MBIE's broad spectrum of regulatory frameworks. Tasks include preparing legal advice and drafting instructions, collaborating on legislative projects, and engaging with stakeholders, all while advancing your legal expertise in government decision-making and the legislative process.

Team Environment

The Legislation team delivers legal services on developing and amending primary and secondary laws across 18 regulatory systems. You will enjoy a collaborative, autonomous work setting with access to support from colleagues at all experience levels, and engagement with some of MBIE's most high-profile legal matters.

Candidate Profile

• Possession of a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or equivalent degree.
• Eligibility to acquire or hold a New Zealand practising certificate.
• Post-qualification legal experience of up to five years or commensurate relevant experience.
• Strong capabilities in legal research, analysis, and written communication.
• A pragmatic and solutions-oriented approach to legal matters.

Compensation and Application Process

Salary bands are set as follows: Solicitor 1 ranges from $72,869 to $85,537, typically for candidates with up to three years PQE. Solicitor 2 ranges from $88,266 to $121,196, generally for those with three to five years PQE. Appointment level and salary depend on qualifications and experience.
