Software Engineer - Search Platform Experience

About the Role and Team

You will join Atlassian's Search Platform Experience team, dedicated to crafting fast, intuitive, and dependable search functionalities that support millions in navigating Atlassian's suite and external integrations. This frontend-focused engineering position offers the chance to influence the full stack, collaborating with cross-functional teams including product management, design, data science, and machine learning experts to deliver seamless search experiences powered by AI and rich data.

Responsibilities

• Develop, test, and maintain accessible, high-performance search features leveraging React, TypeScript, and modern web standards.
• Lead end-to-end feature delivery encompassing design, coding, testing, deployment, monitoring, and iterative enhancement.
• Contribute to backend services and seamlessly integrate APIs to link user experiences with search, AI, and data infrastructures.
• Collaborate closely across disciplines to transform user challenges into effective technical solutions.
• Enhance system reliability, accessibility, and maintainability of search interactions.
• Utilize user feedback, product insights, and experimental data to refine discoverability and engagement.
• Engage in technical design reviews, code assessments, incident management, and ongoing operational support.
• Boost team efficiency by improving tooling, creating reusable components, documenting processes, and adopting sound engineering practices.
• Share expertise and provide constructive feedback to support team growth and quality improvement.

Qualifications

• Minimum two years' experience in software engineering developing and deploying production-grade software.
• Proficiency building modern web interfaces with React, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS or similar technologies.
• Experience in creating reusable components and designing responsive, accessible UI elements.
• Competence integrating frontend applications with RESTful or GraphQL APIs.
• Strong grasp of software design patterns, data structures, rigorous testing, and debugging methodologies.
• Demonstrated ability to own product features through all phases including design, implementation, deployment, and live operation.
• Commitment to writing clear, testable, maintainable, and efficient code.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills to partner effectively with engineering, product, and design colleagues.
• Ability to manage ambiguity, make sound technical judgments within scope, and proactively flag risks or blockers.

Additional Desired Skills

• Backend development experience using Node.js, Java, Kotlin, or equivalents.
• Familiarity with large-scale SaaS platforms and cloud services such as AWS.
• Knowledge of search technologies, information retrieval, AI-enhanced products, or data-driven user experiences.
• Experience with experimentation frameworks, product analytics, observability tools, and frontend performance tuning.
• Background working with shared component libraries or design systems.
