Senior Backend Software Engineer

About the Role

Atlassian seeks an accomplished Senior Backend Software Engineer to join one of its Sydney-based engineering teams, such as Jira Server, Jira Cloud, or Growth. This role expects a highly capable engineer ready to assume significant responsibility, serve as a mentor and role model for colleagues, and continue growing their expertise.

Work Location and Flexibility

Employees at Atlassian enjoy flexible work arrangements including options to work onsite, remotely, or a hybrid of both. This position is onsite in Auckland, New Zealand, but Atlassian also hires from anywhere in Australia and New Zealand given sufficient timezone overlap.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead complex, large-scale projects independently from design to deployment.
• Develop strategic plans to approach and solve significant technical challenges.
• Address and implement architectural standards while initiating their application on new projects.
• Conduct thorough code reviews and documentation; resolve critical bugs especially those affecting high-risk areas.
• Set an example for comprehensive and impactful code reviews.
• Collaborate across multiple engineering teams on company-wide initiatives.
• Leverage your existing programming expertise to excel in Java development.
• Mentor junior engineers and foster team development.

Required Qualifications

• Proven expert-level programming skills in one or more mainstream languages such as Java, Kotlin, Golang, Python, C#, C/C++, or Ruby.
• Deep expertise in at least one technical domain alongside broad knowledge across multiple technology areas.
• Strong passion for mentoring and collaborating with junior team members.
• Ability to consider customer impact when making technical decisions.
• Keen enthusiasm for continual learning and professional growth both individually and as part of a team.

Additional Information

Although the team primarily codes in Java, Atlassian embraces multiple languages and values candidates' ability to learn and adapt to new platforms. Interview candidates may use the programming language they are most comfortable with to best demonstrate their abilities.
