Role Purpose
The Shift Supervisor supports daily operations of the thrift store under the Store Manager's guidance, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted service across all store activities. The role also involves carrying out duties of a Sales Associate as needed.
Location
This position is located at 125 Main Street, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, B2X 1R6.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage positively and courteously with customers and donors.
- Safeguard the quality and integrity of all donated items.
- Ensure precise completion of all customer transactions, including cash and debit payments.
- Support meeting store financial goals by upholding high customer service standards.
- Open and close the store following established procedures when necessary.
- Process donations by unloading, sorting, packing, pricing, and storing items.
- Maintain product knowledge to effectively respond to customer inquiries both in person and by phone.
- Monitor store security to prevent loss or damage.
- Handle merchandise safely and orderly; assist with stock rotation to maintain inventory freshness.
- Assist in controlling inventory through receiving, sorting, and pricing as instructed.
- Contribute to store merchandising by arranging window and in-store displays to attract customers and ensure an appealing shopping environment through regular cleaning and organizing.
- Replenish stock levels according to supervisor directions and remove inventory from sales floor as needed.
- Maintain quality standards by properly sorting and processing donations.
- Keep the store orderly and clean by tidying shelves, sweeping, dusting, and mopping.
- Comply strictly with store policies and procedures.
- Aid in inventory counting and reconciliation efforts.
- Deliver excellent service to guests and donors.
- Serve as Team Lead or Acting Supervisor for store associates in the absence of the Store Manager.
- Provide operational guidance and on-the-job training for staff as needed.
- Promote a safe, healthy work environment by adhering to health and safety regulations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Working Relationships
- Coordinate internally with NRO Administration and store management and staff.
- Engage externally with donors, clients, and contractors.
Supervision
- Reports directly to the Store Manager.
- Does not have direct reports but may demonstrate certain procedures to others.
Materials and Financial Responsibility
- Manage moderate material responsibilities and occasionally handle small amounts of cash.
Working Conditions
- Permanent full-time role in a normal store environment.
- Consistent physical activity including stretching, lifting items weighing up to 30 pounds without assistance, bending, twisting, pushing, standing, and walking.
- Exposure to dust, fumes, and temperature fluctuations frequently.
- Adherence to deadlines is required.
- Job involves occasional interpersonal conflicts involving guests, donors, vendors, and staff.
- Tasks vary but include repetitive activities at times.
Education and Experience
- Completed some high school education.
- A minimum of two years working experience in store or warehouse settings.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Skills and Capabilities
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to effectively work as part of a team.
- Physical capability to frequently lift and carry up to 30 pounds independently, including bending, twisting, pulling, and pushing.
- High attention to detail.
- Successful completion of required screening and background checks.
Compensation
The hiring salary range for this position is $16.50 to $19.89 per hour, with a maximum of $23.86 per hour. Placement within the range depends on market conditions, internal equity, and relevant experience, skills, and qualifications.
